Full Job Description
Motorsports Performance Analyst

Overview

Michelin is hiring! We have an immediate opening for a Motorsport Performance Analyst who is passionate about race engineering, vehicle dynamics, and extracting performance from data. This role places you directly in the action of top-level endurance and sportscar racing, including WEC and IMSA.

Our Michelin Motorsports team supports external race teams by engineering the only point of contact between the racecar and the ground. The position involves analyzing tire performance, interpreting on-track vehicle data, supporting virtual tire models, and collaborating with internal R&D teams and racing partners.

The opportunity

Motorsport performance is won through small advantages. This role helps turn those advantages into race-relevant insight by connecting tire behavior, vehicle response, and technical recommendations that support Michelin, our internal development teams, and our racing partners.

Success requires technical judgment, clear communication, and the ability to work effectively in fast-paced motorsports environments.

Situated in Greenville, South Carolina, the Michelin Americas Research Center campus is home to a diverse technical community, including engineers, scientists, product designers, test technicians, and support teams who contribute to designing, testing, and industrializing Michelin27s innovative products. Come join our team!

What you will do

Tire performance analysis:

  • Conduct studies using lap time simulation and on-track vehicle data to understand the physical demands placed on the tire.
  • Analyze tire operating conditions and connect tire behavior to vehicle balance, handling performance, and customer needs.
  • Develop or improve tools and methods required to complete performance analysis missions.

Trackside vehicle data analysis:

  • Collaborate with internal tire developers and simulation experts to analyze current performance and contribute to future R&D.
  • Work with customer race teams to provide tire-centric information that supports vehicle performance improvement.
  • Deliver clear, timely summaries that improve understanding of the tire and vehicle combination.

Simulation:

  • Develop and adapt relevant tire models for use in customers27 driver-in-the-loop simulators.
  • Act as a customer-facing technical expert during simulator sessions at customer facilities.
  • Interpret tire physics to support tire and vehicle model development.
  • Promote Michelin models and provide technical support to customers and internal partners.

Tire measurement:

  • Develop methods for lab testing and analyze results for tire modeling and data package generation.
  • Understand test assumptions and limitations and communicate them clearly to internal and external partners.

Motorsports support and travel:

  • Support IMSA/WEC race events, joint tests, and simulator sessions through domestic and international travel.
  • Work in hands-on motorsports environments, often on weekends, with approximately 35% travel.

What you will bring

Technical foundation:

  • B.S. or M.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Automotive Engineering, Motorsports Engineering, or a closely related field.
  • Strong understanding of physics and mathematics related to vehicle dynamics.
  • Experience using simulation tools to support or optimize vehicle performance.
  • Experience analyzing on-track performance using vehicle dynamics principles and statistical methods.

Data analysis and tool development:

  • Experience performing data analysis, including data cleaning, transformation, visualization, and interpretation.
  • Working knowledge of the Python core scientific stack, including NumPy, pandas, matplotlib, and plotly.
  • Experience in software-based tool development, with the ability to create practical solutions when the required tool does not yet exist.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to data accuracy.

Motorsports environment:

  • Strong teamwork, leadership, and organizational skills in trackside or fast-paced technical environments.
  • Comfortable working in race, test, and simulator environments, including support on weekends.

Communication and collaboration:

  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to interact professionally with external partners, suppliers, customers, and colleagues at all levels of the organization.
  • Ability to translate complex technical information into clear recommendations for internal teams and external racing partners.

Desired experience

  • Experience with tire modeling tools such as MF-Tyre, MFSwift, TameTire, or FTire.
  • Hands-on involvement in professional, amateur, collegiate, or other competitive motorsports environments.
  • Experience with: driver-in-the-loop simulator operations, polymers or rubber science, MATLAB.
  • Familiarity with motorsports data analysis software such as WinTAX, HH Timing, Pi Toolbox, Atlas, or MoTeC.
  • French language skills.
