This role is part of Advanced Concepts and Enterprise Engineering (ACE), supporting Blue Origin's mission of millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. The team fosters innovation and drives engineering workflows of the future, shared solutions and standards, simplicity and lower costs, and manufacturable design.

Join Blue Origin as we build infrastructure in space for the benefit of Earth. We're developing a satellite constellation of orbital data centers, Sunrise, designed to transform how compute infrastructure is deployed and leveraged.

The Mission Design Engineer is responsible for trajectory analysis, orbital mechanics, and mission design for individual spacecraft and the Project Sunrise constellation as a whole. In this role you will develop spacecraft delta V budgets, propellant budgets, and maneuver plans. You will develop Launch and Early Orbit Phase (LEOP) operations sequences, collision avoidance capabilities, and end of life deorbit phase plans. You'll help refine the overall constellation geometry, including spacecraft spacing and orbital altitudes. You'll contribute to operating the constellation safely, including collision analysis, orbital debris vulnerability, and reentry planning and safety assessments. You'll work with the New Glenn launch team to optimally select launch deployment targets, with the spacecraft propulsion team to define necessary propulsion capabilities, and with the mission operations team to analyze orbital geometry in support of communications link analysis.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Mathematics, or a related discipline.
  • Strong fundamentals in orbital mechanics and spacecraft trajectories
  • Applied experience with standard mission design tools such as STK, Copernicus, or Monte.
  • Understanding of FCC licenses requirements for demise and operation, as well as, the associated tools.
  • Strong written and visual communications skills
  • Experience programming engineering software/analysis tools such as Matlab and Python, or similar tools.
