Position Overview
The Mission Critical Engineer II (MCE 2) is a mid-level operations role responsible for supporting the safe, efficient, and reliable operation of data center infrastructure. This role builds upon the foundational skills of MCE 1 by requiring deeper technical expertise, the ability to perform root cause analysis, lead maintenance activities, and support commissioning/turnover of new systems. The MCE 2 works closely with senior engineers, vendors, and construction partners to maintain uptime, optimize system performance, and ensure operational excellence within mission-critical environments.
Key Responsibilities
- System Operations & Maintenance
- Operate, monitor, and maintain electrical, mechanical, and plumbing (MEP) systems in live mission-critical environments.
- Perform preventative and corrective maintenance on chillers, CRAC/CRAH units, fan walls, UPS, switchgear, PDUs, RPPs, and related systems.
- Support commissioning and turnover activities (L2-L5) for new equipment and infrastructure.
- Technical Troubleshooting & Root Cause Analysis
- Diagnose complex technical issues, identify root causes, and implement corrective action.
- Provide post-incident documentation, analysis, and recommendations to prevent recurrence.
- Documentation & Process Development
- Draft, review, and execute Method of Procedure (MOP), Standard Operating Procedure (SOP), and Emergency Operating Procedure (EOP) documents.
- Maintain accurate asset and maintenance records in CMMS/MCIM systems.
- Change Management & Controls
- Support system modifications, upgrades, and equipment replacements through established change management processes.
- Coordinate with contractors and vendors to ensure work is performed safely and in alignment with operational standards.
- Performance Optimization
- Monitor system performance and energy usage; recommend optimizations for efficiency and reliability.
- Participate in capacity planning and equipment lifecycle management.
- Emergency Response
- Respond to and mitigate critical system events to maintain uptime.
- Serve as point of escalation for MCE 1 engineers during incidents.
Qualifications
- Education & Experience
- 3-5 years of experience in mission-critical operations, data centers, power plants, or large-scale mechanical/electrical systems.
- Technical Skills
- Proficiency with electrical distribution systems, UPS, generators, cooling systems, and BMS/SCADA platforms.
- Strong understanding of safety protocols, lockout/tagout (LOTO), and NFPA 70E standards.
- Experience drafting and executing MOPs/SOPs/EOPs.
- Soft Skills
- Strong communication and documentation abilities.
- Ability to lead small teams during maintenance and incident response.
- Detail-oriented, with a focus on uptime, safety, and accountability.
