Full Job Description
What's the role?
The Geotechnical Engineer reports to the Senior Geotechnical Engineer with the primary role of ensuring that all geotechnical related issues are managed effectively to safely achieve budgeted production targets.

The specifics:

  • Assist with establishing and maintaining site systems and standards to effectively manage geotechnical risks including procedures, processes, and databases.
  • Review development mining instructions and stope designs and provide recommendations for requirements for safe extraction.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant Company and Statutory requirements.
  • Review and update Ground Control Management Plan/s (GCMP) regularly.
  • Carry out geotechnical evaluations, risk assessments and make geotechnical recommendations to ensure hazards are effectively managed.
  • Collect and analyse geotechnical data associated with the identification of potential and actual rockfall events.
  • Look for, assess, and implement business Improvement opportunities.
  • Engage with site personnel on a regular basis to determine specialist geotechnical requirements.
  • Provide support, guidance, and professional development opportunities to Graduate Geotechnical Engineers.
  • Support the technical and operations teams with short-, medium-, and long-term projects and ensure that all geotechnical risks are considered and managed.
  • Build effective communication and networks with the Mining Department.
  • Assist with daily, weekly, and monthly reporting of mine geotechnical parameters.
  • Provide and monitor training opportunities in an objective process; ensure that training opportunities are made available fairly, consistently and in a manner free from discriminatory bias.
  • Review employees' requests/applications for training based on objective evidence related to job performance, abilities, and interest.
  • Document employees' readiness to train for tasks, noting any operational reasons related to the availability and scheduling of requested training.
  • Maintain training records of employees in the department. Monitor training register and log formal training as it occurs.
  • Participate in the review of any appeals filed by employees concerning training opportunities.
  • Other duties as required.


Qualifications Required
  • Degree majoring in Mining Engineering or in an equivalent field.
  • Computer literacy - Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in writing and verbally, across all levels.
  • Current Driver's License.
  • Able to pass a background check and post-offer physical.

Desired Experience & Competencies

  • Minimum of 2 years' experience in the mining industry, predominantly in underground hard rock in a geotechnical engineering role.
  • Good analytical skills and practical application of geotechnical knowledge.
  • Working knowledge of underground mining methods (e.g., longhole open stoping, air leg stoping and jumbo stoping).
  • Foundational experience in numerical modelling.
  • Advanced computer knowledge and skills - Deswik Design Software, Map3D Numerical Modelling Software, Rocscience Software Suite Phase 2 and 3, Dips & Unwedge and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Strong professional report writing skills.
  • Flexibility to adapt to improved procedures and practices.
  • Awareness of the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) Act & Regulations.


Working a 15 day on, 13 day off rotating schedule up to 12.0 hours a day or more at a remote campsite. Extreme conditions, including but not limited to extreme and changing weather conditions, dust, mud, varying levels of noise, varying degrees of light and dark, in and around artificial light and in a confined work area.

Employees are required to stay on site at the company provided camp during the work rotation. Camp facilities provide dining service, games room, exercise & weight room, sauna, and accommodation rooms. Dormitory rooms have a land line phone, great Wi-Fi & cable TV. Cell service is available through Wi-Fi. The Company provides a bus service to and from Fairbanks, Delta Junction and Tok, Alaska.
