The Opportunity:

Hudbay Minerals Inc. is seeking a Mine Engineer in Training at our Copper Mountain Mine in Princeton, BC. This position is a 4x3 or 7x7, day shift schedule depending on business needs.

Please note that this opportunity is NOT a fly-in-fly-out position.

Location

Copper Mountain Mine is located near the town of Princeton, British Columbia at the center of the scenic Similkameen Valley. Princeton is a community-oriented town with a diverse offering of activities, especially for those who love the outdoors. Princeton is also in close proximity to both the city of Vancouver and the Okanagan.

Summary

Reporting to the senior mine engineers, the Mine Engineer in Training (EIT) supports the safe and efficient operation of Copper Mountain Mine through technical analysis, planning, and engineering support under the guidance of professional engineers. This role is intended for recent graduates or early-career engineers seeking to develop their technical, operational, and professional competencies in pursuit of Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation. The EIT works closely with Operations, Geology, Survey, and other technical disciplines to build practical mine engineering skills while contributing to production, cost control, and safety performance
  • Depending on business needs and individual development goals, the EIT role will rotate through available positions which may include:
  • Drill & Blast: Assist with blast designs, timing, wall control, powder factor optimization, and fragmentation analysis.
  • Short Range Planning: Support weekly and monthly mine plans, dig limits, and near-term sequencing.
  • Long Range Planning: Assist with medium- and long-term mine designs, phase development, and production schedules.
  • Geotechnical Engineering: Support slope design, ground control monitoring, and geotechnical risk management activities.
  • Dispatch Engineering: Assist with fleet management system support, data analysis, KPI reporting, and productivity optimization.
  • Production Engineering: Support operational performance analysis, continuous improvement initiatives, and mine engineering projects.
  • Mine Survey: Support mine survey activities including data collection, surface mapping, volume calculations, and reconciliation


Responsibilities
  • Support engineering work and mine plans to ensure compliance with company standards and regulatory requirements under the supervision of senior engineers.
  • Provide engineering support through mine design, planning, analysis, and field engagement.
  • Assist in the development and maintenance of mine designs, schedules, forecasts, and supporting technical documentation..
  • Collaborate with technical and operational teams to support planning, decision-making, and business objectives.
  • Actively participate in training, mentoring, and professional development activities in pursuit of P.Eng. designation.
  • Perform other duties as required to support the objectives of the Mine Engineering department.


Education & Experience
  • Bachelor's Degree in Mining or Geotechnical Engineering
  • Registered, or eligible for registration, as an Engineer in Training (EIT) with Engineers and Geoscientists BC (EGBC).
  • 0 - 3 years of progressive experience in mining operations, engineering, or relevant co-op / internship roles
  • Foundational understanding of open pit mining methods, mine planning principles, and production processes.
  • Willingness to learn and develop technical competency across multiple mine engineering disciplines.
  • Possess a valid Class 5 British Columbia driver's license and have access to personal transportation


Required Skills
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail.
  • Experience using industry-standard mine planning, scheduling, or data analysis software (Deswik, Minesight, Surpac etc.)
  • Detail and results-oriented with the ability to manage competing priorities
  • Strong organizational, prioritization, and time management skills
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.

Working Conditions
  • Work involves a set work schedule on-site at Copper Mountain Mine and depending on the role and may consist of:
    • 4X3 rotation, 10-hour days.
    • 7X7 rotation - 12 Hours days (Not Camp Position)
  • Exposure to conditions associated with a mine site environment including noise, dust, and varying weather conditions.
  • Regular office-based computer work.
  • Work includes lifting or moving up to 50 lbs
  • Work is conducted in a team environment with regularly scheduled and ad-hoc meetings

Rate of Pay

$87, 930 - $97,700/ annum.
