Role Summary

The Permian Midstream Optimization Engineer Team Lead is accountable for driving measurable value generation across the midstream system through optimization of throughput, reliability, and commercial outcomes. This role maintains a system-wide view of midstream operations and works directly with Operations, Engineering, Maintenance, Pipelines, SWD, Commercial, and Technology teams to convert insights into executable actions.

A critical component of this role is the development of tools, analytics, and optimized processes that automate or improve decision quality, scale best practices, and ensure strong JV and contract performance. Early in the role, field presence is required to build relationships and embed solutions into daily operations. Integration and collaboration with individuals, teams and different groups will be required as part of this role.

Key Accountabilities

System Optimization & Value Delivery
  • Optimize revenues by maximizing processing and minimizing third-party volumes where possible, while maintaining safe operating envelopes and meeting MVC/MRC commitments.
  • Maintain a system-wide view of pressures, volumes, and constraints to maximize flow assurance.
  • Identify and execute near-term optimization opportunities across gas, liquids, oil, and water systems.
  • Quantify and communicate value from optimization actions (e.g., deferment avoidance, utilization improvement).

JV Optimization & Commercial Integration
  • Partner with Commercial to track performance relative to MRC/MVC requirements, ensuring JV terms are upheld.
  • Support forecasting and scenario evaluation to proactively manage JV risk while maximizing enterprise value.
  • Own and optimize third-party connections, ensuring they are value accretive and do not compromise BPX volumes.

Reliability, Flow Assurance & Field Support
  • Own and improve upset response protocols for outages and abnormal operations.
  • Support Operations, Engineering, Maintenance, Pipelines, and SWD teams in resolving system constraints.
  • Serve as the first call for SWD operators on system optimization questions.
  • Assist with injection well and facility issues by identifying control logic or programming improvements (with upstream retaining well ownership).

Tools, Analytics & Process Optimization
  • Develop and deploy tools, dashboards, and analytics that improve transparency into system performance, JV compliance, and value generation.
  • Supervise and analyze KPI data to identify performance improvement opportunities.
  • Apply pattern recognition and anomaly detection to diagnose field issues.
  • Optimize workflows so field actions consistently deliver the highest business value.
  • Evaluate and implement new technologies that enable step-change improvements.

Continuous Improvement
  • Lead or support RCFA and continuous improvement initiatives tied to operational, reliability, or commercial outcomes.
  • Develop clear success metrics and ensure consistent tracking and reporting.
  • Foster a data-driven, value-focused, continuous improvement culture.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Mathematics, Computer Science, or related STEM field.
  • 15 years' experience working directly with oilfield or midstream operations.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with bias toward execution.
  • Ability to communicate optimally across field teams and leadership.

Preferred Skills & Attributes
  • Experience with midstream systems (gathering, compression, treating, pipelines, water/SWD).
  • Proficiency with analytics tools (Python, R, SQL) and data visualization platforms (Power BI, Spotfire, Tableau).
  • Understanding of JV or contract-based performance metrics (MVC/MRC).
  • Growth mindset with ability to quickly learn new systems and technologies.
  • Operator-focused, resilient, and accountable self-starter.

About BP

BP p.l.c. is a British multinational oil and gas company headquartered in London, England. It is one of the oil and gas "supermajors" and one of the world's largest companies measured by revenues and profits. It is a vertically integrated company operating in all areas of the oil and gas industry, including exploration and extraction, refining, distribution and marketing, power generation, and trading. BP's origins date back to the founding of the Anglo-Persian Oil Company in 1908, established as a subsidiary of Burmah Oil Company to exploit oil discoveries in Iran. In 1935, it became the Anglo-Iranian Oil Company and in 1954, adopted the name British Petroleum. In 1959, the company expanded beyond the Middle East to Alaska. British Petroleum acquired majority control of Standard Oil of Ohio in 1978. Formerly majority state-owned, the British government privatised the company in stages between 1979 and 1987. British Petroleum merged with Amoco in 1998, becoming BP Amoco plc, and acquired ARCO and Burmah Castrol in 2000 and Aral AG in 2002. The company's name was shortened to BP p.l.c. in 2001. From 2003 to 2013, BP was a partner in the TNK-BP joint venture in Russia, and from 2013 until Russia's 2022 invasion of Ukraine, held a nearly 20% stake in Rosneft.
