Northrop Grumman Space Systems is seeking Manager Propulsion Engineering 2 to provide leadership to our Composite Rocket Motor Case Process Engineering team at our Clearfield, Utah and Salt Lake City, UT locations.

Role Description & Responsibilities:
  • This Manager will report to the Sr. Manager of Process Engineering that supports Case and Copper Crossing Value Streams. This manager will lead a team of 11 to 14 process engineers and engineering technicians with diverse backgrounds and skill sets
  • The organization is responsible for supporting the molding, mandrel assembly/disassembly, insulation wrapping, and carbon fiber winding processing areas for both the Case (Clearfield) and Copper Crossing (SLC) Value Streams for the manufacturing of development and production composite rocket motor cases
  • The key interfaces of this Process Engineering team include Value Stream Element Team Leads, Component Design, Analysis Engineering, Quality Engineering, Operations, Research & Development, Project Engineering, Program offices, and Supply Chain
  • Safety: Ensure compliance with safety command media and drive a culture of safe behavior
  • Quality: Ensure compliance with quality command media and support efforts to strive for zero defects through corrective actions and continuous improvement
  • Delivery: Promote a collaborative environment with a focus on compliance and timely deliverables
  • Employee: Ensure short- and long-term success through development, positive culture, succession planning, and strategic hiring
  • Cost: Manage material and labor budgets in addition to providing project cost estimates as requested

Job Duties:
  • Establish, foster, and maintain a culture of Safety First
  • Drive a culture of compliance to command media, standards, and best practices
  • Improve planning, execution, and tracking methods to increase engineering process excellence
  • Initiate continuous improvement activities to create high quality and efficient processes and standards
  • Ensure high quality and timely delivery of process documents for downstream use
  • Manage multiple program priorities on engineering deliverables
  • Assure that the organization is properly staffed, equipped and trained to meet current and future program requirements
  • Ensure leadership and key subject matter expert succession plans are in place and be proactive by coaching and mentoring key talent to be able to assume increased responsibilities
  • Utilize effective talent management strategies to attract, retain, develop and engage outstanding people for the organization
  • Manage workloads and ensure staffing needs are fulfilled and projects are appropriately resourced as well as supporting off-shift production/procurement needs that arise
  • Monitor and implement employee development plans
  • Provides guidance, direction, and performance feedback directly to a group on moderately difficult challenges resulting in high impact on the business
  • Coach, support, and motivate to ensure a high performing engineering team. Create and maintain development and succession plans for team members and lead recruiting efforts to maintain team capabilities
  • Establish and maintain collaborative working relationships with other organizations including other disciplines in Science & Engineering, Program Management, Tooling and Facility Engineering, Operations, and Safety & Mission Assurance
  • Develop, communicate and implement vision, strategy, goals and metrics to achieve business objectives for safety, quality, customer satisfaction, schedule, cost, and continuous improvement
  • Increase the understanding and use of strategy deployment, kaizen, problem solving, and lessons learned
  • Manage material and labor budgets
  • Provide input on facility, maintenance, and tooling expenditures and priorities
  • Evaluation and deployment of new manufacturing methods and technologies

Required Qualifications:
  • Minimum of 7 years of experience with a BS degree in a STEM discipline or 5 years with a MS degree
  • Minimum of 3 years of lead, supervisory, or management experience
  • Must be willing to obtain and maintain a U.S. Government security clearance
  • Demonstrated experience as project lead over a cross-functional team
  • Experience with RCCA methodologies / collaborative technical problem-solving skills
  • Demonstrated leadership/experience working closely with Operations and Quality
  • Effective communication and presentation skills


Preferred Qualifications:
  • BS or MS in Engineering or Technology - Manufacturing, Mechanical, Electrical, Chemical or Controls emphasis preferred
  • General experience with solid rocket motor manufacturing, process development, proposals, and processing instructions.
  • Experience with carbon fiber case winding, wound elastomeric insulation, and/or molding processes and technology
  • Prior leadership and direct management experience
  • Demonstrated behavior as a driver for change and continuous improvement
  • Experience with Statistical Process Control


Primary Level Salary Range: $139,100.00 - $208,700.00

The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.

Depending on the position, employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
