Job Description

Provide team and execution leadership to the Electrical & Electronic Solutions (EES) Product Line Team at BAE Systems, Space & Missions Systems (SMS) - a group of motivated problem solvers. We're seeking a collaborative, action-oriented leader to support the EES Product Manager for spacecraft avionics and payload control, mechanism, and sensor electronics. This position requires a desire to lead people, contribute to daily execution activities, and a desire to improve the way BAE Systems, Inc. executes.

The Engineering Strategic Capabilities Unit comprises the technical talent and organizational leadership that enables the successful delivery of high-impact discriminating technologies for our customers' missions. What You'll Do:
  • Responsibility for all aspects of the assigned products, to include technology maturation planning, product lifecycle management, strategy, development, production, financial cost performance.
  • Leads and directs cross functional work and teams to support product development strategy.
  • Work with chief architect to develop Concept of Operations (CONOPS) to drive product requirements.
  • Provide core product team leadership to enable successful transition through the product lifecycle: design concepts, requirements, development, validation, and rate production. Including support to ERBs and CCBs.
  • Engage in Internal Research and Development (IRAD) projects to understand synergies for the creation of products to support product launch.
  • Represent the voice of the customer throughout the development process.
  • Create long term planning horizon to add depth to existing product mixture and expand into adjacent product markets.
  • Defining and shaping product design reuse adoption strategy.
  • Define teams, tools and processes needed to enable product development strategy.
  • Support other Engineering Managers in growing the capacities and capabilities of the EES organization to meet the business needs. Including working with Programs and Supply Chain to create SOWs aligned with work scope, identifying, and selecting Engineering Services suppliers.
  • Communicate relevant higher-level information to department personnel.
  • Provide mentoring to lower-level leaders.
  • Make defendable decisions, often with minimal information, and then re-evaluate, adapt, and update as things evolve and change.
  • Identify IRAD and company overhead improvement efforts that would benefit our programs and our teams, and secure funding for these activities.
  • Maintain a regular and predictable work schedule.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships within the department, the Strategic Business Units, Strategic Capabilities Units and the Company. Interact appropriately with others in order to maintain a positive and productive work environment.
  • Perform other duties as necessary.

On-Site Work Environment: This position requires regular in-person engagement by working on-site five days each normally scheduled week in the primary work location. Travel and local commute between company campuses and other possible non-company locations may be required.

Working Conditions:
  • Work is performed in an office, laboratory, production floor, or cleanroom, outdoors or remote research environment.
  • May occasionally work in production work centers where use of protective equipment and gear is required.
  • May access other facilities in various weather conditions.


Short Term Incentive: Subject to business performance and recommendations of management, this role may be eligible to participate in an incentive compensation plan.

Required Skills and Education

  • BS degree or higher in Engineering or a related technical field is required plus 12 or more years related experience.
  • Each higher-level degree, i.e., Master's Degree or Ph.D., may substitute for two years of experience. Related technical experience may be considered in lieu of education. Degree must be from a university, college, or school which is accredited by an agency recognized by the US Secretary of Education, US Department of Education.
  • Excellent people skills and interpersonal skills are a must as well as the ability to work both independently and with a team.
  • Ability to implement corporate change initiatives is required, prior experience in this area is preferred.
  • Experience in the development of electronics and harnesses and their related components and systems.
  • Ability to apply sound leadership and management principles to an organization of high performing engineers and designers executing throughout the full program lifecycle.
  • Ability to operate at the system level and interface to all engineering disciplines and organizations.
  • Demonstrated mentoring, leadership and team building skills.
  • An understanding of electronics and harnessing development, manufacturing, and test processes.
  • Excellent attention to detail while appreciating the bigger picture of the complex and ambitious projects that we take on.
  • Ability to work with minimal oversight and direction in near-term and long-term, self-identified objectives is critical.
  • Proficiency in MS Office tools and solid computer skills.

Preferred Skills and Education

  • Electronic project execution leadership experience and/or Electrical background
  • Experience specifying and ordering Electrical/Electronic Engineering (EEE) parts.
  • Knowledge of the lifecycle of development for electrical engineering projects from start to finish.
  • Knowledge of the lifecycle of development for electrical harness projects from start to finish.
  • Experience with Aeronautical/ Aerospace Payload and/or Space Vehicle technology through program work for NASA, NOAA, DoW, and classified customers.
