The OpportunityThe S&C Maintainer reports to the S&C Supervisor and has good interpersonal skills, substantial experience in most S&C systems from a variety of different suppliers, an excellent safety record, and a very safety-conscious mindset.
The candidate is required to be part of a schedule rotation that will ensure the client's operation is covered 24 hours/day, 7 days/week, 365 days a year.
The successful candidate will have a portion of the territory that will encompass Metrolinx's Newmarket Subdivision from downtown Toronto up to Barrie, Ontario and/or Metrolinx's Weston subdivision from downtown Toronto up to Brampton, Ontario.
Required Skills and Qualifications- At least 2 years of railway signals maintenance experience in a high-density CTC environment
- Substantial knowledge of S&C Standard Code of Practice and General Instructions
- Ability to read and understand technical drawings and specifications
- Demonstrated knowledge of CTC Signal Systems
- Demonstrated knowledge of different road crossing warning system technologies
- Demonstrated knowledge of wayside inspection systems and hazard detectors
- Experience with test methodologies required when replacing vital components in a signal system
- Experience with the creation and reviewing of crossing deactivation plans
- Knowledgeable on when and how to use local controls at field locations
- Completion of Class I Railway signals maintainer or technician training apprenticeship or equivalent
- CROR qualification
- Substantial troubleshooting and root cause analysis experience
- Strong organization skills, primarily for work and materials inventory
- Ability to perform a variety of physical tasks (including lifting and moving loads of approximately 50 lbs)
- Proficient and comfortable with climbing a signal structure wearing a fall-arrest harness
- Valid driver's licence required
- Ability to follow company procedures and maintain a cordial relationship with clients
- College diploma in a related technical field (ex: telecommunications, electronics, etc.) is an asset
Summary of Key Responsibilities:- Install, test, maintain and troubleshoot railway Signaling & Communications (S&C) systems, including CTC, interlocking equipment, level crossing warning systems, track circuits, axle counters, local control devices, and other wayside signal components.
- Read, interpret, and apply technical drawings, wiring diagrams, schematics, specifications, standards, CROR rules and Siemens/railway procedures.
- Conduct inspections, diagnostic testing, and performance verification of electrical, electronic and communication components to ensure compliance with safety and operational requirements.
- Identify root causes of equipment failures, perform corrective maintenance, and replace defective components in accordance with engineering specifications and safety standards.
- Support planned outages and commissioning activities, including preparation and execution of crossing shutdown plans, testing procedures, documentation, and system restoration.
- Perform preventive maintenance on signaling and communication systems, ensuring reliable operation of field equipment and adherence to railway safety regulations.
- Utilize specialized test instruments and software for calibration, diagnostics, verification, and system monitoring.
- Maintain detailed records of inspections, maintenance activities, component replacements, test results, work reports, and inventory usage.
- Collaborate with engineers, supervisors, and technical teams to ensure safe, efficient, and timely execution of maintenance work on active railway infrastructure.
- Carry out physical tasks related to installation and maintenance, including lifting and moving equipment up to 22 kg in accordance with safety guidelines.
Hourly rate is commensurate with experience and as per CBA, and ranges between $41.31 CAD
