Metallurgist

Summary:

Conducts inspections and analyses of engine components for purpose of identifying manufacturing or field usage problems which result in the component not functioning to the satisfaction of the customer. Investigates and conducts experiments concerned with physical characteristics, properties, and processing of metals to develop new applications and methods of commercially fabricating product from metals. Works with suppliers in defining processes and reviewing process and part changes.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following.
  • The incumbent retains the authority to discharge the responsibilities required of this position.
  • Conducts inspections and analyses of engine components for purposes of identifying manufacturing or field usage problems which resulted in the component not functioning to the satisfaction of the customer. Conducts microscopic, macroscopic, and other tests and investigations on samples of metals and alloys for purposes of metallurgical control over products.
  • Develops specifications relating to control of vendor product and vendor processes. Develop specifications relating to control of TCM product and processes used in Manufacturing and Assembly.
  • Directs laboratory personnel in preparing samples such as polishing or etching and designates area of sample where microscopic or macroscopic examination is to be made.
  • Maintain the integrity of material related documents including Lab Procedures & special process operating procedures. Studies photomicrographs and performs microscopic examinations on samples to determine metal characteristics such as crystal structure, porosity, and homogeneity.
  • Interprets findings and prepares drawings, charts, and graphs for inclusion in reports for reference or instruction purposes, and writes reports regarding findings, conclusions, and recommendations.
  • Provides metallurgical expertise to engineering design efforts, engineering investigations and supplier quality functions as required. Serves as a principal authority in Metallurgy.
  • Tests alloys in tension, compression, impact, bending, or fatigue devices to study physical characteristics for manufacturing purposes or determine compliance with manufacturing specifications and standards.
  • Manage implementation of quality or supplier quality aspects to new product, new supplier or new operations processes.
  • Other duties as assigned.


EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
  • Fifth year college or university program certificate; or two to four years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience


LANGUAGE SKILLS
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write.
