Responsibilities

  • Develop and ensure adherence to clinical protocols and care pathways.
  • Facilitate interdepartmental collaborations and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Represent Calgary Corridor Emergency Departments in various committees and forums.
  • Conduct second-level reviews on complex patient complaints and promote interdisciplinary collaboration.

Full Job Description
The Department of Emergency Medicine (Alberta Health Services - Calgary Corridor) is accepting applications for the Deputy Department Head - Operations. This role works in close partnership with the Calgary Corridor Clinical Department Head and is responsible for overseeing clinical operations across the Calgary Corridor Emergency Departments.

Accountabilities / Deliverables

Leadership & Accountability
  • Reports to and is accountable to the Calgary Corridor Clinical Department Head for operational matters.
  • Co-leads Clinical Operations for the Calgary Corridor Emergency Departments.
  • Provides leadership in process innovation, operational strategy, and quality improvement initiatives

Operational Oversight & Coordination
  • Works closely with Emergency Department Physician Site Leads and Operational Leads to manage Corridor-wide operational needs and develop policy
  • Provides oversight to ED Site Leads regarding daily operational matters.
  • Coordinates and supports responses to critical incidents across sites.
  • Oversees development and revisions of physician clinical protocols and care pathways with ED Site Leads
  • Co-leads, with the DEM Clinical Nurse Specialist, development of nursing protocols and clinical guidance documents through the Calgary Corridor Clinical Document Committee
  • Participates in bimonthly Protocol Committee meetings.
  • Coordinates, with the Department Head, interdepartmental collaborations, quality improvement initiatives and meetings

Committees, Representation & Governance
  • Co-chairs Calgary Zone (Corridor) Department of Emergency Medicine (ZDEM) monthly meetings.
  • Attends the Calgary Corridor Executive Council meetings with the Department Head and other Deputies (monthly)
  • Represents Calgary Corridor Emergency Departments at key forums:
    • Physician Executive Committee
    • Quality Assurance Committee
    • Annual Emergency Medicine Corridor Retreat
    • Other committees as delegated
  • Acts on behalf of the Clinical Department Head at Corridor-wide meetings as needed.

Quality, Patient Care & Complaints
  • Collaborates with Site Leads and Assistant Site Leads on complex patient complaints
  • Leads second-level complaint reviews and escalates issues as appropriate.
  • Promotes interdisciplinary collaboration to improve care quality and processes.
