Position Title: Medical Director
Reporting to: Chief Operating Officer
Location: Chapel Hill, NC
Compensation: $235,000-250,000 per year, depending on qualifications, plus bonus potential and benefits
Summary: The Medical Director will provide clinical leadership, in close partnership with the Behavioral Health Director, to enable a better health experience with improved clinical and cost outcomes for our consumers/members. This leader will be responsible for infusing an evidence-based mentality across our entire platform-from intervention design and content production to product roadmaps and Member Services. The Medical Director will define and own medical success metrics, oversee the development of consumer health journeys, and serve as a primary clinical resource for all teams across Well.. Key Responsibilities: - Clinical Strategy & Outcomes
- Define Success Metrics: Partner with the COO and cross functional leaders to define and achieve company-wide clinical and operational success metrics and Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for members and clients.
- Intervention Design: Design and deploy effective clinical interventions to secure performance guarantees and improve member health outcomes.
- Cost Management Collaboration: Partner with the Director of Medical Cost Management and Health Outcomes teams to validate clinical pathways that drive ROI and cost containment.
- Clinical Audits: Lead client-sponsored clinical audits in partnership with the Member Services and Client Success team
- Content Strategy & Clinical Accuracy
- Pathway Development: Oversee the development and validation of clinical pathways, ensuring they remain rooted in peer-reviewed evidence and standard clinical guidelines.
- AI Content Evolution: Explore and develop a strategic point of view on the transition toward greater integration of generative AI in content production and platform.
- Audit & Governance: Own the clinical content style guide and lead regular audit cycles to update or retire outdated health information.
- Clinical Leadership & Compliance
- Scope Enforcement: Clearly define and enforce the company's clinical boundaries, ensuring the platform does not cross into diagnosis, treatment, or medical advice.
- Regulatory Advisory: Stay abreast of the regulatory landscape (FDA digital health guidance, FTC rules) and advise leadership on compliance implications.
- Safety Framework: With Behavioral Health Director, develop and maintain clinical safety protocols for members in crisis and define clear escalation pathways to external care.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Product & Data Science: Provide clinical input to the Product team on roadmap items and collaborate with Data Science on cost benchmarking and risk prediction models.
- Operations & Member Services: Partner with senior Operations leaders to support the strategy and QA of wellness and advocacy programs.
- External Advocacy: Co-Chair Well's Clinical Advisory Board and cultivate relationships with partners, external medical advisors, and other key network members.
Requirements- MD or DO with a current license; MPH or related MSc is a plus.
- Minimum of 5 years of clinical experience, preferably in primary care.
- 3+ years of leadership experience in a healthcare setting or health-tech environment.
- Deep understanding of clinical pathways, behavioral science frameworks (e.g., motivational interviewing), and health technology.
- A strong orientation toward healthcare quality measures, claims data, and ROI calculations.
- Demonstrated ability to build relationships and influence diverse teams across Product, Marketing, and Operations.
