Position Summary
The Medical Director provides strategic oversight and clinical leadership for all medical services, a department with an operating budget of approximately $9.2 million. The Medical Director plays a pivotal role in guiding a multidisciplinary team of over 50 clinical professionals, including 14 direct reports, to deliver high-quality, student-centered care.
The Medical Director's leadership team includes the Assistant Medical Director, the Assistant Director of Clinical Services, the Assistant Director of Nursing Services, and selected lead staff. This position functions as a mentor, consultant, and leader for physicians, advanced care providers, nurses, and ancillary staff. Under the general direction of the Executive Director of UHS, the Medical Director champions evidence-based clinical excellence, fosters a culture of continuous improvement, and ensures alignment with best practices in college health. In conjunction with the Executive Team of UHS, the Medical Director works to maintain an engaging, collaborative, and productive working environment for all staff.
This position also provides direct care to UO students.
The Medical Director is available in a consultative role for other areas of clinical care such as physical therapy, dental, pharmacy, lab, and radiology.
In addition to internal leadership, the Medical Director serves as a key liaison to the broader University of Oregon community and local medical partners. The role involves close collaboration with campus stakeholders, including Student Life partners, University Housing, and others to support holistic student wellness.
This position requires successful completion of a criminal background check and routine screening of Medicaid and Medicare Exclusion Lists. Employee loses eligibility for employment if on the List of Excluded Individuals and Entities (LEIE) and/or System of Award Management (SAM). In addition, employee must be in compliance with UHS policies regarding tuberculosis screening, measles and mumps (MMR), seasonal flu, hepatitis B, and other immunization requirements.
Minimum Requirements
• Graduate of an accredited medical or osteopathic school
• M.D. or D.O. licensure by the Oregon Medical Board, or ability to obtain by agreed upon start date of employment
• Valid Drug Enforcement Administration certification for prescription of controlled substances, or ability to obtain by agreed upon start date of employment
• Current American Heart Association (AHA) CPR certification, or ability to obtain by agreed upon start date of employment
• Maintains ABMS-approved board certification in Family Medicine, Internal Medicine or Emergency Medicine
Professional Competencies
• Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills
• Basic computer skills and experience in using practice management software
• Ability to provide culturally appropriate care for a diverse college population
• Ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds, in support of an inclusive and welcoming environment
Preferred Qualifications
• Experience in college health care at a large public institution
• Three years of supervisory experience
• Experience in a multidisciplinary, highly matrixed healthcare environment
