Description:
The Home Parenteral Therapy Program (HPTP) is a Calgary regional program run out of each of the four adult hospitals. Patients requiring HPTP medical care are primarily referred from two streams;
1) Hospitalized individuals with complex infections requiring ongoing intravenous antibiotic therapy - but capable of being discharged to the community, and
2) Acutely ill individuals suffering from infectious syndromes that may avoid hospitalization provided that acute infectious disease assistance and intravenous antibiotic therapy can be provided via an ambulatory route.
The goal of the program is to ensure patients receive life-saving therapy for complicated infections (with assistance) at home, with a minimal burden of care, whilst reducing healthcare resources utilization and hospitalization. The Calgary Corridor is now seeking a new Medical Director of the HPTP.
Duties of the perspective HPTP medical director include the following:
- Provide medical input and direction into the operational aspects of the clinic at all four acute care hospital sites (SHC, PLC, RGH, and FMC) such as assisting with contract/purchasing decisions.
- Collaborate with external agencies, such as Alberta Health, and other zones in AHS to coordinate patient care experiences.
- Participate in identifying optimal patient selection criteria and therapeutic options. Provide medical input into the procedures, medical care and outcomes analysis of the program.
- Develop a means to monitor and report on quality assurance/improvement.
- Attend regular program administration and management meetings.
- Provide medical liaison with nursing staff and to assist with staffing development and treatment workflows.
- Work with the Infectious Diseases Section Chief to ensure optimal physician staffing, and appropriateness.
- Continuously improve the various antibiotic regimes that can and are being used.
- Participate in developing epidemiological, pathogenesis, economic, and therapeutic research in the area of infections seen in these clinics during the term of this contract.
- Work to develop and understand quality of life outcome parameters relevant for patients suffering complicated infections, and to ultimately analyse and interpret the results and make recommendations on how to use these to optimize patient care
Qualifications:
Key qualifications and attributes required for HPTP medical director include:
- Training and expertise in infectious diseases; candidate will hold certification in Infectious Diseases from the Royal College of Canada, or equivalent
- Be a member of the Calgary Corridor Infectious Disease Division.
- Demonstrate experience and competency in Quality Improvement
- Demonstrate a vision and action plan with other members of the HPTP leadership to continually optimize the program over time based on system demands and clinic capacity
The candidate must be eligible for Licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta.
