Medical Director, Anesthesia
Gynecology Surgical Services
BC Women's Hospital + Health Centre
The Medical Director, Anesthesia provides strategic, clinical, and operational leadership for Gynecology Surgical Services at BC Women's Hospital + Health Centre. Working collaboratively with physician and operational leaders, the Medical Director is accountable for advancing quality, patient safety, service excellence, physician engagement, education, research, and innovation. The role serves as a key liaison between Surgical Services and the Department of Anesthesia and supports organizational, regional, and provincial priorities. The Medical Director, Anesthesia for Gynecology Surgical Services reports directly to the Senior Medical Director, Gynecological Surgical Services, Reproductive Medicine and Specialized Programs.
Key Responsibilities Clinical and Operational Leadership • Provide medical leadership to support safe, high-quality, patient-centred anesthesia services within Gynecology Surgical Services.
• Partner with physician and operational leaders to optimize patient access, pre-anesthetic clinic operations, operating room efficiency, resource utilization, and service delivery.
• Lead and support strategic planning, program development, and implementation of initiatives that improve performance, access, and patient outcomes.
• Co-chair the Surgical Services Program Committee and participate in leadership committees and organizational initiatives as required.
• Provide input into physician resource planning, recruitment, credentialing, operating, and capital planning processes.
Quality, Safety and Physician Leadership • Champion a culture of quality improvement, patient safety, accountability, and continuous learning.
• Monitor quality indicators and support quality improvement, accreditation, and performance management activities.
• Participate in reviews of patient safety events, medical audits, peer reviews, and implementation of improvement strategies.
• Support physician engagement and collaborate with medical leadership to address performance concerns impacting quality of care.
Education, Research and Innovation • Support medical education, professional development, and training initiatives for physicians, learners, and interdisciplinary teams.
• Promote evidence-informed practice, quality improvement, and research activities within the program.
• Facilitate knowledge translation and the integration of leading practices into clinical care.
Regional and Provincial Leadership • Foster collaborative relationships with internal and external partners to advance innovation, best practices, and improved patient access across the continuum of care.
• Provide leadership and consultation related to anesthesia and procedural sedation services across British Columbia.
• Represent BC Women's Hospital and PHSA on committees, working groups, and special projects as required.
Qualifications • Medical degree and certification in Anesthesiology from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (or equivalent).
• Eligibility for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia.
• Demonstrated experience in medical leadership within a complex healthcare environment.
• Proven experience in quality improvement, patient safety, physician engagement, and clinical operations.
• Strong leadership, communication, relationship-building, and change management skills.
• Commitment to collaboration, equity, diversity, inclusion, and culturally safe care.
• Experience supporting research, education, and academic activities is an asset.
