The Department of Cultural Services enriches the community by fostering creativity, inclusion, and lifelong engagement in the arts. The Department fulfills a number of key functions including operating the Marin Center facilities and campus as rental venues and producing the award-winning Marin County Fair. In partnership with Marin Cultural Association, the Department programs diverse events and exhibits in the visual arts galleries, oversees the Frank Lloyd Wright Civic Center docent tour program, and supports art and culture in Marin County through increasing participation, advancing collaboration, and optimizing resources to create greater access to the arts for all Marin County residents regardless of age, race, ability, or means.
ABOUT THE POSITION

Under the direction of the Deputy Director of Cultural Services, the on-site Media Manager manages a variety of media, communications, and outreach-related activities in support of strategic initiatives, including those involving strategic public relations, marketing, organizational branding, social media, graphics, audio/visual projects, public information, and content for official websites. The position is responsible for the promotion of events and programs at the Marin Center, art exhibits and programs organized by the Marin Cultural Association, the Marin County Fair, the Frank Lloyd Wright docent tour program, and all other Department initiatives. The ideal candidate has experience in arts and non-profit marketing and communications.

Our Highly Qualified Candidate is a creative and strategic marketing/communications professional with a passion for the arts and a deep understanding of how to engage diverse audiences. A results-driven communicator who can translate artistic vision into compelling messages across traditional and digital platforms, enhancing visibility, participation, and support for arts programming. Has the ability to develop, implement, and assess short- and long-term marketing strategies aligned with organizational goals. Exceptional writing, editing, and storytelling skills tailored to diverse platforms and audiences. Experience in audience development, particularly expanding reach to underrepresented communities. Strong design sensibility and familiarity with visual storytelling, branding, and multimedia content creation. Proven ability to work across departments (e.g., programming, development, education) and lead vendors or freelance creatives. Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects, deadlines, and budgets.

QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of:
  • Management principles and practices, including goal setting; budget development, employee development; program development, implementation, and evaluation; and the supervision of employees.
  • Principles, methods, and practices applied in the design and implementation of communication and outreach programs.
  • Techniques and methods used in composing and preparing correspondence, memoranda, newsletters, reports, and similar materials.
  • Desk-top publishing, web content design and development, and basic graphics preparation/presentation applications and equipment.
  • Video/photography and the operation of camera equipment.
  • Modern office practices, methods, and computer equipment and applications related to work.
  • English usage, grammar, spelling, vocabulary and punctuation.
Ability to:
  • Develop and implement goals, objectives, policies, procedures and work standards.
  • Manage programs and staff.
  • Translate unit goals, objectives, and policies into day-to-day operations.
  • Develop effective work teams and motivate individuals to meet goals and objectives and provide services in the most effective and efficient manner.
  • Plan, research, organize, coordinate, and implement a variety of communications, marketing, media relations, and community outreach activities and programs.
  • Identify and implement effective course of action to complete assigned work.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Any combination of education and experience that would provide the knowledge and abilities listed. Typically, this would be the equivalent to graduation with a Bachelor's degree in communications, marketing, public relations or a closely related field and three years of progressively responsible experience in media-related activities, including one year in a lead capacity. Additional professional experience in media activities may substitute for the required education on a year-for-year basis.

Bilingual Certification: Bilingual proficiency is desired, but not required. Candidates must demonstrate proficiency in Spanish to be eligible for bilingual pay. A bilingual proficiency exam will be administered to ensure the candidate possesses the appropriate skill level to meet the requirements of the position.
