Full Job Description
Position Overview:

BWXT Advanced Technologies is seeking a Mechanical System Design Engineer. This position is focused on system design, not detailed component design, and will report administratively to the Mechanical System Design Supervisor. The System Design Engineering group supports programs for internal and external customers across Advanced Manufacturing, Medical Radioisotopes, and Nuclear Reactor Design.

Location:

This position is based on-site in Lynchburg, VA at the Advanced Technologies Office.

Your Day to Day as a Mechanical System Design Engineer:
  • Identify relevant system requirements and interface requirements then prepare appropriate system design documentation such as system design descriptions and control narratives.
  • Select components (e.g., valves, heat exchangers), perform calculations, and prepare specifications for their detailed design and procurement.
  • Design piping systems including line sizing and pressure drop calculations.
  • Lead the creation of appropriate output documentation such as process flow diagrams, P&IDs, component data sheets and system test request documentation.
  • Utilize appropriate regulations, design codes and standards (e.g., ASME) for fluid systems.
  • Coordinate with other interfacing disciplines such as systems engineers, electrical engineers, I&C engineers, mechanical equipment designers, and test engineers.
  • Prepare and present system design results to internal and external stakeholders.


Required Qualifications:
  • A bachelor's degree in engineering (mechanical, nuclear, or similar discipline) or physics is required.
  • A minimum of fifteen (15) years of related work experience is required.
  • Must possess a technical background in engineering design, fluid systems, thermodynamics, and process instrumentation.
  • Must be proficient with standard Microsoft Office applications.
  • Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Must possess the ability to self-direct with minimal day-to-day supervision.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) or Department of Defense (DOD) security clearance, whichever is required.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with the design and/or operation of thermo-mechanical fluid systems for nuclear applications.
  • Experience with fluid system design and modeling software, such as AFT Arrow/Fathom, FlowMaster, Flownex, or comparable tools.
  • Experience with CAD packages, such as SolidWorks or AutoCAD.
  • Programming experience with Python, C++, Fortran, Visual Basic, or similar.
  • Experience with design verification including interface with component vendors and test engineering organizations.
  • System modeling experience in Simulink and exposure to Sysml.
  • Familiarity with NRC and/or DOE requirements.
  • Knowledge and experience in the application of Systems Engineering principles.

Pay: $114,000.00 - $180,000.00

The base salary range for this position in Virginia (US-VA) at the start of employment is expected to be between $114,000.00 and $180,000.00 per year. However, the base salary offered is based on local job market factors, and may vary further depending on factors specific to the selected job candidate, such as job-related knowledge, skills, experience, and other objective business considerations. Subject to these considerations, the total compensation package for this position may also include other elements, such as an annual cash incentive in addition to a full range of medical, retirement, and/or other benefits. Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided at such time the selected job candidate receives an offer of employment. If hired, the selected job candidate will be employed 'at-will,' unless employed at a location and in a position subject to a collective bargaining agreement. The company further reserves the right to modify base salary (as well as any other discretionary payment, compensation or benefit program) at any time, including for reasons related to individual performance, company or individual department/team performance, and other market factors.
