Full Job Description
Mechanical/Structural Design Engineer
BERGVIK NORTH AMERICA INC. • SOUTH BEND, INDIANA • FULL-TIME
WORK ARRANGEMENT
This position will work remotely during Bergvik's South Bend office-development period and will
transition to an in-office position once the local office is established. Candidates must reside in, or
be willing to relocate to, the South Bend area.
Position Purpose
This engineer is responsible for the design, analysis, documentation, and project support of raised access flooring
systems, seismic bracing frames, equipment support structures, pedestals, adapter plates, structural steel components,
bolted and welded connections, mechanical and adhesive anchorage systems, and other custom steel assemblies.
The role supports data centers, laboratories, critical infrastructure, electrical equipment rooms, industrial facilities,
energy projects, military or secure environments, and high-seismic applications, and requires the ability to support
multiple active projects through design, review, fabrication, and installation.
Core Responsibilities
Perform structural and mechanical analysis of raised access flooring systems, seismic bracing frames, equipment
support structures, pedestals, adapter plates, and related steel components.
Evaluate gravity, lateral, seismic, equipment, and other applicable loading conditions, and establish and document
load paths.
Calculate reactions for equipment, frames, pedestals, steel members, concrete slabs, anchors, bolts, welds,
and connections.
Design and evaluate steel members, base plates, footplates, brackets, adapter plates, bolted connections,
welded connections, and mechanical and adhesive anchorage systems.
Prepare complete, organized, client-ready engineering calculation packages that clearly document design assumptions,
loading criteria, analysis methods, results, connections, anchorage requirements, and supporting references.
Review architectural, structural, mechanical, equipment, fabrication, and client drawings to identify missing
information, conflicting requirements, field constraints, and design risks early.
Develop and maintain 3D models, general arrangement drawings, shop drawings, installation drawings, fabrication
details, and engineering documentation, keeping calculations, drawings, models, and project
correspondence coordinated.
Core Responsibilities (continued)
Work with estimating, project management, manufacturing, warehouse, fabrication, and installation teams,
and coordinate directly with fabricators to confirm designs are practical and manufacturable.
Respond to technical questions and review comments from clients, contractors, architects, engineers of record,
consultants, reviewing engineers, and authorities having jurisdiction.
Coordinate with third-party professional engineers when sealed calculations or drawings are required.
Revise calculations and drawings following review comments, updated project information, field conditions,
or design changes.
Support fabrication and installation, including troubleshooting field conditions and evaluating proposed modifications.
Maintain organized files, revisions, calculation packages, drawings, models, and engineering records while
managing multiple projects and deadlines.
Assist with product development, testing, and continuous improvement.
Travel occasionally to project sites, client meetings, fabrication facilities, or installation locations.
ENGINEERING COMMUNICATION STANDARD
Calculation packages and project correspondence must clearly explain engineering conclusions, rather
than relying only on references to drawings, codes, software outputs, or supporting documents. Bergvik
needs an engineer whose work can be followed and reviewed without unnecessary back-and-forth.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, or a closely related discipline.
Minimum three years of relevant engineering or design experience.
Demonstrated experience performing engineering calculations and documenting the basis of design.
Working knowledge of structural steel design, load paths, connections, anchorage, bolts, welds, base plates,
and fabricated steel assemblies.
Experience interpreting architectural, structural, mechanical, equipment, construction, or fabrication drawings.
Proficiency with 2D and 3D CAD software.
Ability to prepare technically accurate, organized, and client-ready calculation packages, drawings, and
written responses.
Strong analytical, problem-solving, organizational, and communication skills, with strong attention to detail.
Ability to work independently while collaborating with a small cross-functional team, and to manage multiple
projects at different stages.
Ability to explain technical information to both engineering and non-engineering audiences.
Candidates with less experience may be considered if they demonstrate strong structural-analysis, calculation
package preparation, and project-coordination capabilities.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with seismic design or seismic qualification.
Familiarity with IBC, ASCE 7, AISC, ACI anchorage provisions, and applicable AWS requirements.
Experience with SAP2000 or comparable structural-analysis software.
Experience with AutoCAD and one or more platforms such as Revit, Autodesk Fusion, SolidWorks, or
comparable software.
Experience with fabricated structural steel components and assemblies.
Experience evaluating post-installed mechanical or adhesive anchors, including familiarity with Hilti anchoring
systems or comparable products.
Experience in data centers, critical facilities, laboratories, industrial facilities, energy infrastructure, electrical
rooms, or similar technical environments.
Experience coordinating calculation and drawing packages for professional review and sealing.
Engineer-in-Training certification preferred; Professional Engineer licensure beneficial but not required.
