Responsibilities

  • Prepare detailed Mechanical work take-offs and estimates for projects focusing on costs of materials, labor, and equipment.
  • Analyze and advise on tendering procedures and recommend tender awards after thorough examination.
  • Establish and maintain comprehensive cost monitoring and reporting systems for tenders.
  • Coordinate with suppliers, subcontractors, and project stakeholders during the tendering process.
  • Engage in site reviews and project closing discussions to ensure quality and compliance.
  • Maintain an updated directory of suppliers and contractors for efficient project execution.
  • Liaise with various stakeholders to prepare feasibility studies for cost adjustments on projects.

Full Job Description
Black & McDonald is actively seeking a Mechanical Estimator to join our Construction team in London. The successful candidate will lead the analysis of cost estimates and preparation of Mechanical work take-offs on mechanical projects. They will provide technical support to project operations, with emphasis on Plumbing estimating and support project changes. Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to: • Prepares Mechanical work take-offs and estimates on projects including costs of materials, labour and equipment required for projects based on contract bids, quotations, schematic drawings and specifications with a focus on ICI Plumbing • Advises on tendering procedures; examines and analyzes tenders, recommends tender awards and conducts negotiations • Establishes and maintains tendering process, sets up cost monitoring, reporting systems and procedures • Coordinates price packages with suppliers, subcontractors, owners, designers and architects regarding tenders • Participates in site review, tender review, tender hand-off, and project closing, as required • Prepares and maintains a directory of suppliers, contractors and subcontractors • Liaises, consults and communicates with engineers, architects, owners, contractors and subcontractors, and prepares economic feasibility studies on changes and adjustments to cost estimates • Conducts material and equipment purchasing for secured key projects. • Updates and maintains estimating logs and past project archive. • Utilizes Estimating software and CRM platform (i.e Autobid, Salesforce). • Travel to various sites or clients to undertake the above. • Other duties as assigned. COMPETENCY REQUIREMENTS • Communicates Effectively • Holds Self and Others Accountable • Teamwork and Collaboration • Values and Respects Others EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS Degree or Diploma in • Engineering • Construction Engineering Technology • Construction Management • Mechanical trade school The following certifications/designations are considered an asset • Mechanical trades background • Gold Seal Certified (GSC) • Professional Quantity Surveyor (PQS) • Project Management Professional (PMP) WORK EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS • 5+ years' estimating experience on Mechanical and/or Plumbing ICI construction projects • Construction scheduling, planning, and execution experience required SKILLS, ABILITIES, AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS • Self-motivated, organized and able to work with deadlines • Extremely thorough, accurate and detail oriented • Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings • Strong knowledge of Ontario Building Code, specialization in plumbing code is considered an asset. • Proficient user of estimating software (such as AutoBid) • Knowledge of related local union collective agreements • Proficiency in Microsoft 365 (Microsoft Word, Excel, Project) • Knowledge of construction software (such as Procore) • Knowledge of construction contract law (CCDC and other typical contract types.) • Valid Ontario G class driver's license • Willingness to drive within the local Southwest Ontario area for site reviews, typically 1-2 days per week The expected salary range for this role is between $80,000 - $100,000 per year. The starting salary will be determined based on several factors such as the successful candidate's qualifications, including but not limited to education and experience. Base pay is one component of Black & McDonald's total rewards package.
