Mechanical Engineer (Industrial & Manufacturing Facilities) - Canada

Burns & McDonnell Canada is seeking a Staff Mechanical Engineer to support the design and execution of mechanical systems for a variety of building and industrial projects across Canada. This position offers the opportunity to work on multidisciplinary project teams delivering innovative solutions for commercial, industrial, manufacturing, food & beverage, healthcare, institutional, government, and corporate facilities.

The Staff Mechanical Engineer will support projects from conceptual planning through detailed design, construction, commissioning, and startup. The successful candidate will collaborate with internal and external stakeholders while contributing to high-quality engineering solutions that meet client objectives, project schedules, and budget requirements.

A P.Eng designation in the province of Ontario is strongly preferred for this role.

Key Responsibilities
  • Support mechanical system design from conceptual development through construction completion.
  • Perform HVAC, plumbing, and utility system design for new facilities, renovations, expansions, and redevelopment projects.
  • Develop engineering deliverables including:
  • HVAC zoning plans and layouts
  • Plumbing and piping layouts
  • Utility distribution systems
  • Equipment schedules and specifications
  • Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs)
  • Sequence of operations
  • Demolition and permit drawings
  • General arrangement drawings
  • Support the design and execution of food, beverage, consumer products, and industrial manufacturing facilities, including associated utility and building systems.
  • Prepare calculations for HVAC, plumbing, utility, and energy systems.
  • Support facility assessments, field investigations, utility audits, and site inspections.
  • Coordinate with architects, structural engineers, electrical engineers, controls engineers, and other disciplines.
  • Review vendor submittals, shop drawings, and technical documentation.
  • Assist with equipment selection, specifications, bid evaluations, and procurement activities.
  • Support construction administration, commissioning, startup, and troubleshooting activities.
  • Conduct field visits to verify existing conditions and support project execution.
  • Participate in client meetings and contribute to maintaining strong client relationships.
  • Support QA/QC reviews and ensure compliance with applicable codes, standards, and company procedures.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related degree from an accredited program and 3 years of mechanical engineering experience, consulting preferred.
  • Bachelor Degree in Mechanical or related Engineering Technology from an accredited program and successful completion of Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam and 3 years of mechanical engineering experience, consulting preferred.
  • Master Degree in Mechanical Engineering and 2 years of mechanical engineering experience, consulting preferred.
  • Strong knowledge in standard engineering techniques and procedures.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work methodically and analytically in a quantitative problem-solving environment and demonstrated critical thinking skills.
  • Proficient in standard engineering techniques and procedures.
  • Strong computer skills (e.g. Microsoft Office Suite)
  • Strong computer skills include AutoCAD, BIM (Revit), 3D Rendering Programs, hydraulic analysis, and HVAC analysis programs.
  • Strong attention to detail, facilitation, team building, collaboration, organization and problem-solving skills.
  • Engineers in Training-EIT Certification Preferred

Preferred:
  • Registration as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng) in Ontario, or the ability to obtain registration through PEO, is strongly preferred.
  • Working knowledge of mechanical engineering principles and building systems designs.
  • Knowledge with applicable codes and standards, including:
  • ASHRAE
  • ASME
  • ANSI
  • National Building Code of Canada
  • Provincial building and energy codes
  • IMC and related industry standards
  • Experience with HVAC, plumbing, piping and utility systems.
  • Experience within Food & Beverage, manufacturing, industrial, healthcare, or commercial building projects.
  • Proficiency with Revit is strongly preferred. Experience with AutoCAD, Navisworks, Bluebeam, and other engineering design software is also desirable.
  • Familiarity with energy modeling, hydraulic analysis, and HVAC analysis software.
  • Experience supporting construction, commissioning, and startup activities.

Compensation

The expected compensation range for this position is $100,000.00 - $130,000.00 annually, in compliance with Ontario's Pay Transparency requirements. Final compensation will be based on education, qualifications, prior experience, and work location. The total annual compensation package will consist of a base salary and eligibility to participate in our discretionary year-end incentive bonus program.
