BRIEF POSTING DESCRIPTION:

The P YM POWER PLANT MECH ENGRG Department of the P POWER SUPPLY ENGINEERING Division at Hawaiian Electric Company has 1 Management vacancy available. (Role: PROFESSIONAL) This posting seeks to fill at either the Mechanical Engineer I or Mechanical Engineer II position; whichever level is most suited to the qualifications of the applying candidate.

Mechanical Engineer I

JOB FUNCTION:

Under direct supervision of higher-level professional engineers, performs design, project engineering, project management and general engineering duties in support of the capital construction programs of HECO, MECO and HELCO.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Independently evaluates, selects and applies standard engineering techniques, procedures and criteria using judgment in making minor adaptations and modifications. Assignments have clear and specified objectives and require the investigation of a limited number of variables.

Receives instruction on specific assignment objectives, complex features and possible solutions. Assistance is furnished on unusual problems and work is reviewed for application of sound professional judgment.

  • Prepares plans, layouts, design calculations and related engineering design in accordance with applicable codes, ordinances and regulations.
  • Conducts engineering studies, economic studies and field inspections, and prepares associated reports.
  • Prepares cost estimates, cash flows, schedules, material and construction specifications and construction contracts for projects assigned
  • Performs project engineering and project management functions on selected projects
  • Coordinates design effects by consulting engineers, evaluates proposals and bids for engineering services and equipment and makes recommendations.
  • Participates in Company emergency response activities as assigned, including any activities required to prepare for such emergency response.


BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge Requirements
  • Thorough knowledge of the theories and principles of engineering acquired through advanced college level courses or equivalent experience.
  • Working knowledge of the principles and practices of engineering design, project engineering, project management and construction methods associated with electric utility facilities normally acquired through extensive (11 years) experience.
  • Working knowledge of personal computers and/or mainframe systems and related software applications such as spreadsheets, word processing, etc.


Skills Requirements
  • Must have or be able to qualify for a State of Hawaii driver's license. Must meet the standards for driving positions stated in the Hiring Standards for Driving Positions policy. These standards may be adjusted periodically to meet business and safety objectives.
  • Good oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to remain flexible in a demanding work environment and to adapt to rapidly changing priorities.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to influence and persuade various groups or individuals.


Experience Requirements
  • Extensive (11 years) experience in the design of additions, modifications, extensions, upgrades and rearrangements of company generation, transmission, substation, and communication and control systems and facilities, and three (3) years design experience must be in a specific and relevant area of expertise.
  • A BS degree in engineering in a relevant discipline from an accredited engineering school may be substituted for eight (8) years of experience.


Mechanical Engineer II

JOB FUNCTION:

Under direction of higher level professional engineers, performs design, project engineering, project management, standards development and general engineering duties in support of the capital construction programs of HECO, MECO and HELCO.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

As a fully competent engineer in all conventional aspects of higher assignments, plans and conducts work requiring judgment in the independent evaluation, selection, and substantial adaptation and modification of standard techniques, procedures and criteria. Devises new approaches to problems encountered.

Independently performs most assignments with instructions as to the general results expected. Receives technical guidance on unusual or complex problems and supervisory approval on proposed plans for projects.

  • Prepares plans, layouts, design calculations, design and construction standards and related engineering design work in accordance with applicable codes, ordinances and regulations.
  • Performs project engineering and project management functions on major capital projects for HECO, MECO and HELCO.
  • Conducts engineering studies and prepares reports.
  • Prepares requests for proposal for engineering services, evaluates proposals and makes recommendations. Directs design efforts by consultants and checks designs prepared by consultants.
  • Prepares material, equipment construction specifications for bid, and evaluates proposals and makes recommendations for purchase.
  • Develops project schedules and project cost estimates for inclusion in the capital budget.
  • Conducts field inspections to verify field conditions and check compliance with specifications, then prepares reports of findings.
  • Participates in Company emergency response activities as assigned, including any activities required to prepare for such emergency response.


BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of engineering design, project engineering, project management, standards development and construction methods associated with electric utility facilities normally acquired through a minimum of 5 years relevant engineering experience.
  • Working knowledge of personal computers and/or mainframe systems and related software applications such as spreadsheets, word processing, etc.
  • Working knowledge of City, State and Federal laws, regulations and procedures as related to specific projects and assignments.

Experience Requirements
  • Extensive (13 years) experience in the design of additions, modifications, extensions, upgrades and arrangements of relevant generation, transmission, substation, and communication and control systems and facilities, and five (5) years design experience must be in a specific area of expertise.
  • A BS degree in engineering in a relevant discipline from an accredited engineering school may be substituted for eight (8) years of experience.
  • State of Hawaii Professional Engineer License in relevant discipline is required in order to stamp drawings and designs required to obtain construction and building permits.
