Full Job Description
HDR is currently seeking a Mechanical Engineer for our rapidly-growing Colorado building engineering team. This is a key role in our integrated Architecture/Engineering practice in Denver, Colorado. Our building engineering team is a full-service, multi-disciplinary organization including structural, site civil, mechanical, electrical, low voltage, control systems and specialty design services that is co-located with our Architecture studio to support a collaborative and fully-integrated design process.

You must be an accomplished Mechanical Engineer who can use your accumulated expertise to impact the full project lifecycle from pursuit through final project completion. You are a conceptual and strategic thinker who can engage and challenge our architectural and engineering designers during the early stages of projects to inform the conceptual design. You will leverage our integrated practice and your own deep expertise to add value to our project delivery process and lead engineering teams to deliver well-coordinated, high-quality designs.

Your primary duties as a Mechanical Engineer include:

  1. Take roles as Project Manager, Mechanical Engineer and/or Engineer-of-Record on selected projects.
  2. Manage BIM design staff and junior engineers on various project task work
  3. Assist Marketing and Business Development groups in developing fee proposals and scope of work documents for HVAC, Plumbing, and Industrial Process Equipment scopes of work
  4. Attend internal and external project coordination meetings
  5. Selection, coordination, and layout of HVAC and Plumbing systems and equipment as a part of assisting architects, engineers, and end users in the design of various facilities
  6. Perform heating and cooling load calculations
  7. Develop control diagrams and sequences to establish operation of building systems
  8. Technical report writing
  9. Development of project specifications
  10. Construction document development and modification
  11. Design support during construction including field observations, submittal & shop drawing review, Request For Information (RFI) support
  12. Other design / engineering tasks as assigned
  13. Conduct QC and technical reviews and provide guidance on active projects.
  14. Mentor and coach team members on the nuances of your professional market(s).


Professional and Business Development:

  • Collaborate with HDR Architecture and Engineering teams on project pursuits.
  • Participate in discipline-level and project-level scope/fee development for project pursuits.
  • Participate in project interviews as an engineering leader.
  • Assist in successfully attracting, recruiting and hiring outstanding new team members to grow and strengthen the practice.
  • Represent HDR through active participation in the professional community to build HDR's reputation as a world-class provided of professional services.
  • Perform other duties as needed for the advancement of HDR's stature and market penetration.
  • Active participation in industry organizations is encouraged. Participation in professional development seminars, courses, workshops, or conferences is encouraged and should be approved in advance of attendance
  • Additional industry certifications are also encouraged (LEED AP, etc.). Shall maintain continuing education requirements for any certification or license


Preferred Qualifications

  • Minimum of 5 years of mechanical/plumbing engineering experience related to building design
  • Engineering experience and project history in Colorado in one or more of these market sectors: Healthcare, water facilities, aerospace, aviation, hospitality/hotels, commercial real estate, mission-critical facilities.
  • Working knowledge of Bluebeam Revu
  • Energy modeling/ building energy use assessment
  • LEED or other sustainability accreditations
  • Working knowledge of Revit and AutoCAD software
  • Experience in design calculations and layouts
  • Working knowledge of IESVE or similar load analysis software
  • Technical and specification writing skills
  • Working knowledge of current industry codes and standards

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering
  • Previous experience in mechanical system design of commercial or institutional buildings
  • Requires professional engineering license recognized by the licensing board for the location of the position offered. Example: Professional Engineer (PE or P.Eng) license.
  • Experience in commercial or institutional facilities
  • Computer experience using MS Office, Trane TRACE or similar software, manufacturer selection software
  • Previous experience with an architectural/engineering or engineering consulting firm
  • An attitude and commitment to being an active participant of our employee-owned culture is a must
