Description
We are seeking a highly skilled Mechanical Engineer to support the design, optimization, and lifecycle management of specialized equipment used in railroad support applications and related industries. This role focuses on developing solutions for heavy lifting, track maintenance, and logistical challenges unique to the rail industry.
The ideal candidate will collaborate cross-functionally to create designs that meet stringent performance, safety, and regulatory requirements while ensuring durability, efficiency, and maintainability.
Work Schedule & Environment
• Schedule: 9/80 work schedule (every other Friday off)
• Primary Location: Chesterfield, VA (with occasional work in Richmond Shop) as well as opportunities to work in the field, with vendors and directly with customers.
• On-Call: As part of a first-response organization, engineers may be required to support emergency operations as needed
Key Responsibilities
Product Development
• Design new crane systems, modify existing structures, and create new hardware to enhance fleet capabilities
• Translate abstract concepts into functional designs and visualize 3D structures from 2D inputs
• Perform reverse engineering and redesign critical components
• Validate designs through hand calculations, FEA, modeling, and prototyping
• Conduct field testing to simulate operating conditions and ensure performance expectations are met
Aftermarket Support
• Lead crane rebuild and refurbishment projects, including inspection, repair planning, and upgrades
• Ensure compliance with all safety and industry standards throughout rebuild processes
• Provide technical support to internal teams and customers, including troubleshooting and on-site assistance
Production
• Maintain and improve Cranemasters' catalog of standard equipment designs
• Coordinate with manufacturing and leadership to support production schedules and product releases
• Ensure builds meet customer specifications and regulatory requirements
• Oversee documentation, testing, and final delivery of equipment
General Engineering Responsibilities
• Apply strong problem-solving and critical-thinking skills to resolve engineering challenges
• Take ownership of designs throughout manufacturing and testing phases
• Maintain deep knowledge of company products and industry standards
• Communicate effectively with internal teams, customers, and vendors
• Support quality assurance initiatives and continuous improvement efforts
• Manage time effectively to meet project timelines and production deadlines
• Maintain thorough documentation of designs, calculations, and processes
• Adapt quickly in high-pressure, dynamic environments, especially during emergency response situations
Skills/Qualifications
• Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering (EIT or PE preferred)
• Experience with SolidWorks or equivalent parametric modeling software (CSWP or CSWA preferred)
• Proven understanding of Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and ability to validate results with hand calculations
• Knowledge of relevant engineering standards and specifications
• Experience with hydraulic and electrical systems (preferred)
• Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office, especially Excel
• Excellent organizational, time management, and multitasking abilities
• Strong written and verbal communication skills
• Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with cross-functional teams
• Commitment to safety policies and procedures
• Willingness to travel (5-10%) for inspections and field support
• Valid driver's license
Physical Requirements
• Ability to walk, stand, sit, and communicate throughout the workday
• Occasional climbing on equipment for inspection and troubleshooting
• Ability to work extended hours and respond to emergency calls as needed
• Work environment may involve moderate stress during critical operations
