Full Job Description

Mechanical Designer, New Product Introduction

Thermal constraints limit AI infrastructure, semiconductor equipment, power electronics, and defense systems. JCI removes those constraints. Enabled by the Stack Forging™ process, JCI produces high-performance thermal components and cooling loop solutions — purpose-built for direct integration into AI, HPC, and mission-critical systems.  JCI has built the industry's leading thermal management platform for the applications that demand it most.

As a Builder on the Stack Forging Thermal Solutions team at Johnson Controls, you'll join a team of sleeve-rollers who set a high bar for themselves and their co-workers. We foster a collaborative culture with no silos, where everyone is encouraged to think out loud. If you are passionate about your craft and don't give up until you've found a way, you will make an ideal Builder!

What You’ll Do

As a Mechanical Designer, New Product Introduction, you will work on engineering efforts to bring products from the lab into mass production. Your primary objective will be assisting in the design, commissioning, and improvement of the machines used in the Stack Forging process.

Who You Are

You have experience with large industrial machines through all phases of their life cycle. You have specific expertise in designing, building, and maintaining mechanical systems, including hydraulics and control systems. You prioritize machine functionality, reliability, and safety. You take full ownership of your projects, driving them forward independently while maintaining a strong sense of urgency. You know when to pivot, prioritize, and adapt to shifting demands to keep progress on track.

This role requires a high degree of technical ownership, cross-functional collaboration, critical thinking for root cause analysis, and an ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment. This position generally requires a commitment of 4 days onsite per week.

Responsibilities

*Responsibilities are subject to change based on shifting business needs

  • Work with cutting-edge control systems that cover our entire process, including high-speed laser cutting, motion controls, precision hydraulics, and temperature control

  • Build and maintain hydraulic press systems, work to identify potential future suppliers, and support in the construction of new machines

  • Specify and select hardware, including programmable logic controllers (PLCs), motor drivers, single and 3-phase AC power system components, and associated personnel and equipment safety interlocks.

  • Proficiency and willingness to take an active hands-on role in troubleshooting, machine build-out, and machine maintenance

  • Design and implement human-machine interfaces (HMI)

  • Work cross-functionally to gather input from many different stakeholders across multiple systems

  • Write and maintain the IO lists, state diagrams, and specifications for all machines

  • Control and power cable design, generate run lists, and make component selection.

  • Own and update subsystem designs, BOM, specifications, CAD models, and electrical schematics

  • Set up testing rigs and fixtures for measurement and characterization

  • Work with 3rd party vendors to design, build, and troubleshoot

  • Work cross-functionally to push the envelope of what is possible

  • Select and manage external vendors for components and subsystems

  • Document and communicate all aspects of your work

  • Have a safety-first mindset when designing control schemas

Qualifications

  • 3+ years of experience in industrial manufacturing

  • Sound fundamentals and industrial best practices for robust equipment design for the production of serially manufactured machinery

  • Experience working with large-scale industrial equipment, such as hydraulic systems or precision motion controls

  • Background with industrial-scale presses, including vendor selection, installation, build, and maintenance

  • Exposure to a variety of automation systems, control cabinets, industrial sensors, PLCs, data acquisition, and I/O devices. SolidWorks Electrical (with PDM), ladder logic

  • A "get it done" attitude, demonstrating resourcefulness and a drive to find creative solutions to difficult, ambiguous challenges.

  • Readiness and enthusiasm to work in a dynamic environment that features: rapidly changing requirements, quick iteration with novel hardware, heavy communication demands, and process development that involves critical, high-risk trade-offs.

  • Dynamic and flexible mindset, easily balancing the immediate needs of the day-to-day with long-term strategic thinking and planning.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiar with metal additive manufacturing, robotics, or industrial automation
