Full Job Description
Mechanical Engineer IV
Mechanical Design Engineer IV
NASA Glenn Research Center
Brook Park, Ohio

HX5 is currently seeking an experienced Mechanical Engineer to join our team in Brook Park, Ohio in support of the GEARS contract at NASA Glenn Research Center.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

The selected candidate will support the design and fabrication of an integrated ground test rig that will demonstrate the combined operation of the thermal, power, battery, structural, control-surface, and command-and-control subsystems for a 1,500-lb-class distributed electric propulsion research drone. This effort is part of NASA's Transformational Tools and Technology (TTT) project.

The engineer will work closely with the NASA Technical Monitor and a multidisciplinary team that includes experts in thermal analysis, structural engineering, and systems engineering. Most work will be performed in a laboratory environment and will involve conducting analyses, selecting components, and procuring hardware required to build both the ground test rig and the scale-model research drone. Hardware will be produced on-site using rapid-prototyping methods when feasible, or sourced from external vendors when necessary.

The scope of work also includes developing the overall assembly architecture, with emphasis on electrical component placement, wire routing, thermal management strategies, and the integration of mechanical mechanisms for control surfaces.

Required Skills:
  • Extensive experience in mechanical hardware design, including complex mechanisms and structural components.
  • Proven ability to translate conceptual ideas into fully engineered, manufacturable components.
  • Proficient in SolidWorks and CREO, with strong capabilities in part modeling, assembly creation, and drawing package development.
  • Experience sourcing hardware through rapid-turn machining services such as Xometry and Protolabs.
  • Skilled in performing structural analysis using Ansys.
  • Strong understanding of mechanical mechanisms, cable routing, thermal line routing, and subcomponent placement within integrated assemblies.
  • Ability to clearly document design decisions and engineering rationale.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate within a small, multidisciplinary team in a fast-paced environment.

Desired Skills and Experience:
  • Experience applying AI tools to enhance mechanical design workflows, or a demonstrated willingness to build these capabilities. Primary platforms include ChatGPT and Microsoft AI technologies.

Education/Experience:

Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering degree from ABET accredited program with the following education and experience:
  • Bachelor's degree and 10 years of relevant experience
  • Master's degree and 6 years of relevant experience
  • PhD and 0 to 3 years relevant experience

Other Position Requirements:
  • Proof of U.S. Citizenship
  • Must be able to complete a U.S. government background investigation

HX5 offers a competitive salary and benefits package to include:
  • Relocation Assistance
  • Medical/Dental/Vision Insurance
  • 401(k) plan with Company Match
  • Paid Holidays
  • Accrued Paid Time Off
  • Parental Leave
  • Life Insurance
  • Tuition Reimbursement
  • Medical and Dependent Care Flexible Spending Accounts
  • Pet Insurance
