The Mechanical Design Engineer will support the Loitering Munitions team in the design, development, and documentation of mechanical systems for Class 2 Unmanned Air Vehicle (UAV) platforms. This engineer will contribute to the full design lifecycle from concept through production, leading mechanical design efforts with a high degree of independence and ownership.
Position Responsibilities
- Develop and own mechanical designs for UAV components and assemblies using SolidWorks, maintaining all documentation and revision control within EPDM
- Support composite structure design including laminate layup schedules for Kevlar and carbon prepreg materials
- Perform thermal modeling and analysis using the SolidWorks simulation suite to validate component and system-level designs
- Produce detailed drawings, BOMs, and release packages that meet engineering and manufacturing requirements
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams including systems, electrical, and manufacturing engineers to ensure designs are producible and meet program requirements
- Identify and resolve design issues through structured root cause analysis and engineering judgment
- Support hardware builds, testing, and field activities as required
- Other duties as assigned
Basic Qualifications (Required Skills & Experience)
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering required
- 6 to 10 years of relevant mechanical design experience in aerospace, defense, or UAV development
- Advanced proficiency in SolidWorks 3D modeling and EPDM data management
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and manage multiple design tasks with minimal supervision
- Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to produce clear engineering documentation
Other Qualifications & Desired Competencies
- Direct experience designing Class 2 UAV systems or similar small unmanned platforms is highly desired
- Composite layup design experience including Kevlar and carbon fiber prepreg laminates is a plus
- Proficiency in thermal modeling using SolidWorks Simulation or Flow Simulation is a plus
- Familiarity with aerospace manufacturing processes and DFM principles
- Able to excel in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment where small teams share a broad variety of duties
- Displays strong initiative and drive to accomplish goals and meet program objectives
- Takes ownership and responsibility for current and past work products
- Has effective problem-solving, analytical, interpersonal, and communication skills
Salary Range: $120,000-$140,000/KThe actual salary offered is dependent on various factors including, but not limited to, location, the candidate's combination of job-related knowledge, qualifications, skills, education, training, and experience
