Position Description

As a member of the Modernization Project Office, theexperienced mechanical inspector will inspect commercial plumbing /mechanical/HVAC work associated with new construction and/or renovation work to ensure conformance with contract documents and applicable codes and standards. The ideal candidate will have field experience in construction with an emphasis on HVAC, plumbing, pipe fitting and fire protection.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Preparation of daily narrative reports.
• Daily verification of work performed and confirmation that materials and workmanship match specifications and shop drawings.
• Coordination of construction work with facility operations and other stakeholders.
• Responsible for verification of quality of work and installation in accordance with NYS building codes.
• Verification of contractor installation methods with contract drawings and specifications.
• Conformance with contractual safety requirements.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

• Bachelors of Science Degree or NICET III certification or a comparable combination of education and experience.
• 5 or more years9 experience in construction installation and inspection of large scale commercial HVAC units, industrial size chillers and cooling towers, and commercial ductwork.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).
• Working knowledge of the latest version of the mechanical and plumbing ICC building codes.
• Experience testing and trouble shooting HVAC, chiller, cooling tower, and ductwork startup issues typically encountered during construction.
• Working knowledge of testing methods and criteria for all types of mechanical systems is required.
• Demonstrated commitment to working safely, acting ethically, and taking personal accountability for operational excellence.
• Valid driver9s license.
• The ability to work Overtime on weekends or extended hours to accommodate contractor work schedules.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

• Bachelor9s degree in mechanical engineering.
• 10 or more years9 experience in construction inspection of large scale Commercial HVAC systems within a medical/ researcher/ or pharmaceutical setting.
• Experience with plumbing, fire sprinkler, steam and general piping systems.
• ICC Certified Mechanical Inspector.
• NICET Level II and III Certification.
• Working knowledge of the latest version of the mechanical and plumbing NYS/ ICC building codes.
• Knowledge of fire-stopping, fire-rated construction, and/or fire-proofing.
• OSHA 30-hour training.

Must meet physical requirements of the position, including but not limited to:

• Physical coordination and balance
• Continuous walking/standing
• Hearing speech and alarms
• Good near vision; depth perception; normal color vision
• Heights (high and low hazard)
• Lifting (up to 40 lbs); frequent bending/twisting
• Use of vertical ladders (>4 ft)
• Ability to work in warm and cold environments (outdoors)

Other Information:

Due to the need for unescorted access to controlled areas of the laboratory, this position is limited to U.S. citizens in accordance with site security requirements. A security clearance is not required at this time.

Brookhaven Laboratory is committed to providing fair, equitable and competitive compensation. This is a multi-level role and the full salary range for this position is $92,050 - $156,150 / year. You will be placed at the level and salary commensurate with your experience. Salary offers will be commensurate with the final candidates qualification, education and experience and considered with the internal peer group.
