This is a working supervisory position responsible for performing complex mechanical maintenance and repair work, as well as providing day-to-day supervision and leadership within the Douglas County Fleet Services division.
The position supervises an assigned team of mechanics and coordinates maintenance and repair activities for a diverse fleet of vehicles and equipment. Responsibilities include assigning and prioritizing work, monitoring preventive maintenance compliance, providing technical guidance and employee development, ensuring accurate documentation, and supporting safe, efficient, and cost-effective shop operations.
Generally, the hiring range is $76,350-$95,438 annually.Qualifications, education and experience as it relates to the position will betaken into consideration when determining hiring salary.
Typical work schedule: 10-hour work days, Monday - Thursday, 7:00am to 5:30pm additional overtime hours may be required.
This position includes an annual clothing allowance of $150 and a monthly tool allowance of $100.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: (The following examples are illustrative only and are not intended to be all inclusive.)
- Supervises and performs maintenance and repair activities for vehicles and equipment assigned to the Fleet Services shop or location.
- Provides day-to-day supervision to assigned Fleet Services mechanics. Assigns and prioritizes work, provides technical guidance and support, coordinates training, conducts employee performance evaluations, and administers corrective action as appropriate to ensure established policies, principles, and standards are maintained.
- Reviews and approves employee timesheets and assists with scheduling and staffing needs.
- Implements, administers, and monitors preventive maintenance programs to promote vehicle and equipment reliability, cost-effectiveness, and compliance with or exceeding manufacturer specifications.
- Works closely with the Parts Department to order required parts and supplies and maintain accurate inventory information within the fleet management system, including expenditures, repair parts, supplies, and other applicable costs.
- Analyzes vehicle and equipment utilization and maintenance information within FASTER to ensure appropriate maintenance programs and schedules are followed.
- Develops, implements, and maintains mechanic training and certification programs to ensure employees have the technical knowledge and skills necessary to remain current with industry repair standards, technologies, and best practices.
- Reviews work orders, repair documentation, and related reports for accuracy, completeness, and appropriate documentation.
- Prepares, performs, and documents required annual Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) inspections and ensures inspection records are properly maintained and filed.
- Initiates, documents, and tracks applicable manufacturer warranty claims to maximize warranty recovery and reduce County repair costs.
- Monitors fleet assets to ensure compliance with applicable State of Colorado emissions testing requirements.
- Provides technical assistance and performs mechanical maintenance and repair work as operational needs require.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
- High school diploma or GED equivalent required.
- Graduation from an automotive, diesel, or heavy-equipment technical training program is preferred.
- Eight (8) years of fleet-based automotive and/or diesel mechanical experience.
- One (1) year of experience in a fleet lead or supervisory role.
- A combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered.
CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES, & REGISTRATIONS:
- Must possess a valid Colorado Driver's License upon hire. A motor vehicle record review is required at the time of hire and periodically throughout employment.
- Must possess or obtain a Colorado Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) permit within 90 days of hire and obtain a Class A CDL with no "E" restriction within two (2) years of the date of hire.
- Must possess or obtain within 90 days of hire a Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, Air Pollution Control Division, Diesel Fleet Self-Certification Program inspection card.
- Must possess or obtain applicable certification to service and repair automotive air-conditioning systems and perform heavy-duty diesel opacity emissions testing.
- Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) and/or manufacturer certifications are preferred.
- This position requires successful completion of a criminal background check including fingerprinting through a national database.
