About our MFM Fellowship Program

The Maternal-Fetal Medicine fellowship program has a long academic tradition and currently has one fellow per year. The fellows rotate at three Kansas City hospitals, providing clinical care for high-risk patients, performing clinical, bench, and translational research, and mentoring residents and students. Each hospital offers excellent exposure to education, with different strengths at each Center.

University Health-Truman Medical Center, the UMKC School of Medicine, and Children's Mercy Hospital are on the Hospital Hill campus with access to basic science laboratories. UHTMC cares for some of the highest acuity patients in the region, providing a rich environment of maternal and fetal pathophysiology.

In addition to a long, distinguished MFM program, St. Luke's Hospital provides fellows exposure to a dedicated heart disease and pregnancy clinic staffed by Cardiology and MFM.

Children's Mercy houses the Fetal Health Center, established to provide on-site delivery to infants requiring immediate quaternary care resources. The FHC receives referrals from much of Missouri, Kansas, southern Nebraska and Iowa, and northern Oklahoma and Arkansas for fetal and neonatal structural and functional abnormalities. Approximately 50% of referrals are for structural cardiac anomalies. Our fellows work with the MFM faculty, participate in echocardiography with Pediatric Cardiologists, attend consultations with pediatric nephrologists, cardiovascular surgeons, neurologists, geneticists, and radiologists, and participate in a broad range of obstetrical and fetal surgeries.

Partnering for Healthcare Excellence

Physicians and hospitals must collaborate in today's complex healthcare environment to achieve excellence in clinical quality, patient safety, and service quality. We can achieve this kind of partnership by collaborating with local and regional doctors and facilities to ensure high-quality patient care for mothers and babies.

Never Stop Learning

At University Health, we offer exciting research and academic achievement prospects, guided by our esteemed faculty, who lead various projects alongside our fellows and residents. Several of these initiatives have culminated in publications in major journals pertinent to our specialty.

Our faculty and learners benefit from a deidentified patient database from our Electronic Medical Records. This resource significantly enhances our ability to conduct impactful research. Furthermore, we have partnered with Oracle Health, which has implemented EMR systems across over 800 hospitals and provides vital statistical analysis and grant-writing support.

We are also proud of establishing multiple clinics across our hospital campuses, catering to a diverse patient population. This initiative enriches our research database and enhances our clinical collaborations.
