Job Title: Materials Manager

Departments: Purchasing

Position Summary:

The Material Manager is responsible for leading all purchasing, materials planning, inventory control, and supplier management activities to support the company's electronic manufacturing operations. This position oversees the Purchasing Department, the Planning team, and inventory, shipping, and receiving personnel, including the supervision, performance management, training, and development of team members. The Material Manager ensures the timely procurement and availability of materials required to meet production schedules, customer demands, and inventory objectives. This role develops sourcing strategies, manages supplier relationships, establishes buyer goals, and drives continuous improvement in cost, quality, delivery, and inventory performance.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Supervises/Lead: Buyers and Purchasing personnel, the Planning team, shipping/receiving, and inventory personnel; Leadership, supervision, performance management, training, and development of staff.
  • Establish departmental goals based on inventory requirements, sales forecasts, and business objectives.
  • Manage procurement activities to ensure adequate material supply while maintaining inventory targets.
  • Negotiate pricing, contracts, delivery schedules, and supplier agreements to achieve cost savings and operational efficiency.
  • Develop and maintain strategic supplier relationships to support business needs.
  • Monitor inventory levels and collaborate with Production, Sales, Inventory Control, Quality, and Accounting to ensure material availability.
  • Review and approve bids, supplier selections, and purchasing decisions.
  • Identify and qualify new suppliers to improve cost, quality, and delivery performance.
  • Manage Master Production Scheduling (MPS) and Material Requirements Planning (MRP) activities.
  • Ensure accurate purchasing and inventory transactions within the ERP system.
  • Resolve material shortages, supplier issues, and supply chain disruptions.
  • Track and report key performance metrics related to inventory, supplier performance, and purchasing effectiveness.

Supervises: Directly supervises Buyers and Purchasing personnel, Planning team, shipping / receiving and inventory personnel.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
  • Strong knowledge of materials management, procurement, inventory control, planning, and supply chain principles.
  • Experience managing supplier relationships and contract negotiations.
  • Knowledge of electronic manufacturing processes, electronic components, and supply chain challenges within the EMS industry preferred.
  • Strong negation, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficiency with ERP/MRP systems and Microsoft Office applications.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Strong leadership, organizational, and decision-making abilities.
  • Knowledge of inventory management metrics and forecasting methodologies.
  • Ability to drive continuous improvement initiatives and cost-reduction programs.
  • Must be eligible to work with ITAR-controlled data.


Education, Experience and Training:
  • Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Supply Chain Management, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 5-7 years of progressive experience in purchasing, materials management, supply chain, or procurement within a manufacturing environment.
  • Minimum of 3 years of supervisory or management experience.
  • Experience in electronics manufacturing services (EMS), PCB assembly, or related high-tech manufacturing preferred.+ years of purchasing, materials management, or supply chain experience in a manufacturing environment; electronics manufacturing preferred.
Physical Requirements and Working Environment:
  • This role is performed on-site and requires regular in-office attendance.
  • Must be able to lift up to 15lbs at times
  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer
  • Occasional squatting, bending, or reaching.
  • Ability to travel as needed to support procurement activities and supplier relationships.
