What you will be doing:Engineering Assistant 2:At an intermediate/advanced level, provides journey level technical support and assistance to the Southcoast Region (SR) Quality Assurance (QA) Engineer. Under the supervision/direction of the SR QA Engineer, acts independently and oversees the day-to-day functions of the Southcoast Region Materials Laboratory (SRML). The SRML is an AASHTO accredited lab with capabilities to meet the regions Construction, Pre-Construction, and Maintenance sections testing needs. Assures accurate and timely operation of the SRML by scheduling, facilitating, and on occasion conducting laboratory work. Facilitates the activities and mentors of up to two (2) certified Technicians.
Maintains national accreditation for the SRML as described under AASHTO R18, including adding new tests, equipment calibrations, and staying abreast of changing program requirements. Conducts tests and provides material testing training. In the absence of certified in-house technicians, outside consultant services, or inter-department AASHTO accredited laboratories, performs materials and proficiency testing at the direction of the QA Engineer. References plans and specifications as needed to ensure proper testing. Proficient in and responsible for AWP test data input.

Special Note:Both levels of this position require:
- A valid driver's license to operate motor vehicles.
- The incumbent is required to achieve and maintain WAQTC certifications in all modules. The incumbent must obtain all applicable WAQTC certification within 6 months of hire. NICET Level II certification in Soils, Asphalt, and Concrete is required within 1 year of hire.

One year of entry level engineering, architectural or land surveying experience as an Engineering Assistant 1 with the State of Alaska or the equivalent elsewhere.
Or:
A bachelor's degree with a major in engineering, architecture or land surveying from an institution not accredited by ABET.
AND
An Engineer-In-Training (EIT) or Land Surveyor-In-Training (LSIT) certificate issued by a state or the National Council of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors; or verification of passing the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) or Fundamentals of Surveying (FS) examination.
AND
One year of entry level engineering, architectural or land surveying experience as an Engineering Assistant 1 with the State of Alaska or the equivalent elsewhere.
Or:
Five years of progressively responsible subprofessional engineering experience of which two years was as a Journey level Engineering Technician or Drafting Technician 3 with the State of Alaska, or the equivalent elsewhere.
Substitution:
Graduate study in engineering and/or architecture may be substituted for the required experience as an Engineering Assistant 1. (2 semester/3 quarter hours equal one month of experience).
Special Note:The employing department will identify Engineering-In-Training (EIT) positions.
Transcripts which indicate the credit hours earned for the specific coursework may be requested at the time of interview or prior.
Engineering Assistant 3:Bachelor's degree with a major in engineering, architecture or land surveying from an institution accredited by ABET.
AND
Two years of engineering, architectural or land surveying experience of which one year was at the working or intermediate trainee level. The specific experience includes such work as an Engineering Assistant 2 with the State of Alaska or the equivalent elsewhere.
Or:
A bachelor's degree with a major in a branch of engineering from an institution not accredited by ABET.

An Engineer-In-Training (EIT) certificate issued by a state or the National Council of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors; or verification of passing the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) examination.
AND
Two years of engineering, architectural or land surveying experience of which one year was at the working or intermediate trainee level. The specific experience includes such work as an Engineering Assistant 2 with the State of Alaska or the equivalent elsewhere.
Substitutions:
Four years of any combination of ABET accredited postsecondary education in engineering, architecture, or land surveying (3 semester/4 quarter hours equal one month) and/or engineering, architectural or land surveying experience may substitute for the required degree.
Graduate study in engineering or architecture may be substituted for the required experience (2 semester/3 quarter hours equal one month).

FLEXIBLY STAFFEDThis position is flexibly staffed. This vacancy may be filled at either the Engineering Assistant 1 or Engineering Assistant 2 level, depending on the applicant's training and/or experience. The full range of salaries is listed above. Starting salary will be determined by the level the position is hired at. If filled at a lower level, promotion to the higher level will occur upon successful completion of the probationary period and required training, as well as the applicant meeting the minimum qualifications of the higher job class.
