Materials Engineer / Metallurgist

Job Purpose

BorgWarner is seeking an experienced Materials Engineer / Metallurgist to join our North American Engineering team. In this customer-centric role, you will serve as the lead materials and metallurgical expert of the North American Engineering team. You will work closely with OEM customers, global engineering teams, manufacturing, quality, purchasing, and program management to deliver innovative material solutions that meet customer performance, durability, cost, and timing requirements.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct necessary metallurgical testing and analysis on component failures. Serves as technical expert on complex metallurgical (creep, fatigue, etc.) testing and failure analysis.
  • Serves as an advisor to product engineering, purchasing, and quality on matters pertaining to material specifications, appropriate processes and routings including casting processes (sand, permanent mold, investment, etc.), ductile cast iron, cast and wrought aluminum, titanium, Nickel alloys, polymers, composites, tribology, and corrosion.
  • Conducts, plans and assists with metallurgical study, development, testing and analyses of new designs, processes and procedures for turbochargers, fans, and fan drives.
  • Reports metallurgical or process issues and makes recommendations to engineering staff on how to resolve/correct the issues.
  • Reviews and recommends new or enhanced metallurgical testing equipment or protocols.
  • Evaluates and administers contracts with vendors for the provision of services and equipment.
  • May contribute to site strategic planning and budgeting efforts for metallurgical testing.
  • May represent the site on company-sponsored steering teams.
  • Ensure compliance with BorgWarner quality, safety, environmental, and engineering processes and standards.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


What we are looking for
  • Bachelor of Science in a metallurgical field is required. Master's degree preferred.
  • Minimum 5 years of years of metallurgical development experience with ferrous and non-ferrous metals.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience working with castings and high temperature materials is required.
  • Strong customer-facing engineering experience with demonstrated ability to lead technical discussions and build customer relationships.
  • Knowledge of turbochargers, engine cooling systems, thermal management products, fan drives, rotating equipment, automotive, commercial vehicle, or off-highway applications preferred.
  • Knowledge of the principles and methods used in complex metallurgical and processing analyses is required.
  • Technical knowledge to conduct destructive and non-destructive testing and evaluation of materials is required.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with experience in root cause investigations and corrective action implementation.
  • Excellent verbal, written, presentation, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Project.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and work effectively with minimal supervision.
  • Willingness to travel for customer visits, supplier visits, testing activities, and BorgWarner meetings as required.
