A Day in the Life
The Manufacturing/Controls Engineer II provides electrical and controls engineering support for multiple manufacturing areas within the General Surgical Products Focus Factory at Medtronic. This role contributes to initiatives focused on cost savings, manufacturing process improvements, assembly equipment retrofits, and the procurement and implementation of new equipment. The engineer collaborates with cross-functional teams to ensure manufacturing equipment meets Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) standards and consistently produces high-quality assemblies that meet product specifications. Responsibilities include implementing engineering best practices and standard procedures, developing and maintaining equipment documentation such as operating instructions, electrical schematics, specifications, parameter settings, software backups, and defining documents, and supporting equipment validation activities through the development of FAT and SAT documentation and the execution of Installation Qualification (IQ) functional protocols.

Responsibilities may include the following and other duties may be assigned:
  • Provide technical support to maintenance and manufacturing teams as required.
  • Research, develop, design, and test electrical components, equipment, systems, and networks.
  • Address manufacturing issues on a daily basis and implement corrective actions as needed.
  • Troubleshoot machine stoppages and provide root cause analysis to support manufacturing operations.
  • Read and interpret electrical schematics and technical documentation.
  • Troubleshoot equipment utilizing various control platforms including PLCs, CNC, PC-based controls, vision systems, and robotics.
  • Create and update electrical schematics and component BOMs in AutoCAD for legacy equipment.
  • Develop equipment specifications and work with vendors to quote automated and manual equipment solutions.
  • Identify and implement process improvements to increase Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) of manufacturing systems.
  • Review equipment quotes and participate in design reviews with project teams for custom assembly equipment.
  • Participate in DFMEA, PFMEA, machine risk assessments, and quality (CTQ) processes to ensure specifications are clearly defined and documented.
  • Support equipment specification development, supplier selection, and supplier qualification activities.
  • Participate in equipment validation activities.
  • Coordinate and communicate activities across cross-functional teams within and outside of operations.
  • Travel up to 10% domestically to manufacturing sites and supplier locations.

  • Experience troubleshooting equipment using conventional diagnostic tools and PLC software.
  • Experience with PLC platforms such as Mitsubishi and Rockwell.
  • Experience with safety PLC platforms including GuardLogix, CompactLogix, and ControlLogix.
  • Experience with HMI systems such as FactoryTalk ME and SE.
  • Experience with vision inspection systems including Cognex and Keyence.
  • Experience with industrial robotics such as Stäubli, Yamaha, FANUC, or Epson.
  • Experience with servo and stepper motion control systems and controllers.
  • Familiarity with machine risk assessment methodologies and electrical safety circuit design.
  • Knowledge of data acquisition systems, IoT trends in manufacturing, and manufacturing network architecture is a plus.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude is a plus.


For Baccalaureate degrees earned outside of the United States, a degree that satisfies the requirements of 8 C.F.R. § 214.2(h)(4)(iii)(A) is required.

Salary ranges for U.S (excl. PR) locations (USD):$83,200.00 - $124,800.00

This position is eligible for a short-term incentive called the Medtronic Incentive Plan (MIP).

The base salary range is applicable across the United States, excluding Puerto Rico and specific locations in California. The offered rate complies with federal and local regulations and may vary based on factors such as experience, certification/education, market conditions, and location. Compensation and benefits information pertains solely to candidates hired within the United States (local market compensation and benefits will apply for others).

The following benefits and additional compensation are available to those regular employees who work 20+ hours per week: Health, Dental and vision insurance, Health Savings Account, Healthcare Flexible Spending Account, Life insurance, Long-term disability leave, Dependent daycare spending account, Tuition assistance/reimbursement, and Simple Steps (global well-being program).
