The MD position will be based in New York or London and will lead the Sovereign Advisory team globally, driving the delivery of client rating and debt advisory and advisory-linked solutions in close coordination with regional and product partners across all geographies.

Sovereign Advisory is fully integrated with the PSB client strategy and Citi's PSB Sovereign Advisory strategy at a global level. The scope of work is global, encompassing all regions in which PSB operates, and focuses on leading the assessment, monitoring, and management of structural, macroeconomic, financial, and high-frequency data to understand, analyze, and forecast economic policy and fiscal/debt sustainability trends worldwide. The MD will advise on and customize Citi solutions for PSB clients across sovereign, multilateral, and public sector segments.

The work of the MD will consist, on the advisory side, of leading a wide variety of complex projects requiring macroeconomic analysis, sovereign credit, and political risk assessment, as well as sovereign debt sustainability analysis. The MD will contribute to originating episodic transactions and will drive client relationship business through targeted sovereign advisory at the most senior levels.

Key Responsibilities Include:
  • Strategic Leadership: Lead the global Sovereign Advisory function, setting strategic direction in alignment with PSB and Citi's broader public sector strategy.
  • Client Coverage & Origination: Drive origination and contribute to the execution of high-value sovereign advisory mandates across all regions (NAM, LATAM, EMEA, APAC), acting as the primary senior point of contact for key government and public sector clients.
  • Macroeconomic & Sovereign Analysis: Oversee and direct the maintenance of an extensive collection of global economic and financial data series, ensuring timely and accurate intelligence to inform client presentations and strategic decisions.

  • Rating Methodology Expertise: Deep understanding of Sovereign and MDB/Supranational rating methodologies, as well as of the linkages between sovereigns and state-owned entities (SOEs) that impact rating assessments, is expected at this level.
  • Business Management: Lead strategic revenue analysis and franchise reviews in partnership with the Global Head of PSB and senior leadership. Oversee preparation of materials for Citi's most senior executives to present and speak at global events and conferences on government financing and public sector topics, requiring seamless coordination across regions and time zones.
  • Cross-functional Collaboration: Partner with every product group at Citi globally to deliver integrated, bespoke solutions for sovereign and public sector clients.
