JOB TITLE: MANAGER, SAFETY AND ENVIRONMENTAL

LOCATION: OPERATIONS CENTER/BANGOR

REPORTS TO: TBD

POSITION STATUS: EXEMPT, NON-BARGAINING UNIT

POSITION OVERVIEW:

The S&E Manager is a key member of the Management team and will provide strong leadership and guidance across the organization, aimed at enhancing our focus on world class safety and environmental compliance. In collaboration with the Senior Leadership Team (SLT), the Manager will continue to lead Versant Powers journey to World Class Safety and build upon the strong safety culture at Versant Power. The Manager will serve as an expert resource in Versant Powers effort to identify safety exposures and will work with operational leaders to find solutions to mitigate or eliminate these exposures. With a demonstrated ability to develop and deliver a comprehensive safety and environmental plan, the S&E Manager is accountable for ensuring that the organization's policies, programs, and initiatives comply with relevant legislation and will lobby for changes in regulations and standards. Knowledgeable in Safety and Environmental Management Systems, the incumbent will oversee proactive auditing and reporting procedures and will communicate strategies and work plans to all levels, from Line Workers in the field to Executive Team members. Working with a strong leadership team at Versant Power, the S&E Manager will be responsible for the continued development, implementation and ongoing maintenance of the Versant Power, Safety and Environmental Management Systems, as well as working as a member of the broader Versant Powers Safety Team, focusing on leading indicators to further develop the safety culture at Versant Power. This includes providing leadership and direction to the Safety and Environmental Teams, the Employee Safety Team (EST), leaders and employees.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • In collaboration with the EST, SLT and Versant Power Safety establish, deliver, and monitor the Versant Power Safety Strategy and Five-year safety plan.
  • Ensure understanding, compliance, and continual update of the Versant Power Environmental Management System
  • Provides leadership and direction for the overall environmental, safety and loss control activities of the Company including contractor safety.
  • Develops and implements a safety management system, including written standards, training requirements, monitoring/auditing elements and corrective action steps. Wherever appropriate these systems will exceed compliance and create value added enhancement to operations and will be aligned with the Versant Power Safety Management System.
  • Ensures company compliance with OSHA, NESC Safety Regulations, NFPA Safety Regulations, FMCSA Regulations pertaining to DOT drug and alcohol testing and driver qualification files, DOT rules and regulations, environmental laws, regulations, or ordinances adopted by federal, state DEP, or local governments that require compliance. And MPUC regulations pertaining to accident reporting.
  • Provides leadership and resource to the Versant Power Operations team.
  • Leads the EST to develop, review, and, when necessary, revise safety rules, safe work practices, procedures and, personal protective equipment as they pertain to all levels of employment.
  • Ensure appropriate incident reporting protocols and established and adhered across the organization.
  • Develops and works with management teams to ensure employee understanding, commitment and compliance with all safety rules and regulations.
  • Ensure that the annual safety and environmental training program elements for employees is developed and implemented.
  • Works with management to develop and organize applicable training at regular safety meetings, Safety Training Days, and periodic specific training sessions.
  • Oversees occupational health training, and exposure monitoring, ensuring exposures and corrective actions are addressed in a timely manner and effectively communicated.
  • Coordinates and supports incident review team as they investigate incident and near miss investigations and conduct root cause analysis.
  • In collaboration with Human Resources provides guidance for the Self-Insured Worker's Compensation Program, Insured Worker's Compensation Program, and Injury Management Program.

REQUIRED EDUCATION, CERTIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
  • Bachelor's degree in Occupational Health; Industrial Hygiene or other related technical field (combined experience in industry and the skills listed below will be considered in lieu of a bachelor's degree for strong leader).
  • A minimum of five years' experience in Occupational Health and Safety and Environmental compliance
  • Strong oral and written communications skills required, as well as strong presentation and facilitation skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully lead and influence without direct authority.
  • Strong change management and organizational development capacity.
  • Knowledge and experience applying OSHA and other related regulatory and compliance.
  • Knowledge of and experience with administering Worker's Compensation program beneficial.
  • Strong oral and written communications skills required, as well as strong presentation skills.
  • Experience in developing and implementing training programs required.
  • Direct experience working with unionized work force preferable.
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to handle multiple priorities and meet deadlines required.
  • Proficiency in use of Microsoft Word, Excel, and Power Point required.
  • Ability to speak with public media outlets as necessary.
  • Position requires identity verification and seven-year criminal background check with update at least every seven years pursuant to NERC standards.

WORK HOURS:

Working between 40-50 hours is experienced. Off-hour monitoring of emergencies is anticipated.

RATE OF PAY:

Salary Level is commensurate with experience and qualifications.
