The compensation offered to the candidate selected for the position will depend on several factors, including the candidate's educational background, skills and professional experience.

The Application Manager provides day-to-day leadership for the functional application team and oversees the planning, design, implementation, optimization, and ongoing support of enterprise applications across RWJBarnabas Health.

This role is accountable for the overall design, development, and optimization of the application while maintaining deep expertise in both the technology and the operational areas it supports. The Application Manager partners closely with operational leaders, subject matter experts, vendors, and IT teams to ensure application functionality supports organizational needs, clinical and operational workflows, and strategic goals.

The Application Manager also serves as a leader, coach, and mentor to the application team, helping establish priorities, remove barriers, manage performance, and create a collaborative, customer-focused environment.
As an Application Manager, a Typical Day May Include
  • Providing day-to-day leadership, direction, coaching, and support to the functional application team.
  • Overseeing application design, configuration, development, testing, implementation, optimization, and ongoing support activities.
  • Understanding application architecture and integration points and evaluating customer needs to identify appropriate technology solutions.
  • Translating business and operational needs into system requirements and application solutions.
  • Partnering with directors, operational leaders, and subject matter experts to perform workflow, data, and technical analyses that inform system design.
  • Assessing current-state workflows and helping develop optimized future-state processes.
  • Identifying potential data conversion, integration, reporting, and technical requirements.
  • Serving as a subject matter expert on application functionality and ensuring the team effectively utilizes vendor and internal resources.
  • Acting as a liaison between customers, operational teams, IT leadership, and application vendors.
  • Maintaining strong communication and productive relationships with vendor support and implementation teams.
  • Managing application releases and upgrades, including reviewing release notes and identifying required changes.
  • Coordinating design and decision-making sessions with operational partners regarding upgrade functionality.
  • Partnering with education and operations teams to identify and coordinate training needs associated with upgrades and new functionality.
  • Ensuring application changes follow established change-control processes and remain compatible with technical and operational requirements.
  • Coordinating application testing, monitoring testing schedules, and escalating issues requiring resolution.
  • Managing incident and enhancement tickets, including escalating aging issues and ensuring teams maintain accurate ticket documentation.
  • Reviewing incident trends to identify opportunities for additional customer education, system improvements, or workflow changes.
  • Coordinating enhancement requests with operations and/or informatics and transitioning large-scale enhancements into formal projects when appropriate.
  • Managing application projects and ensuring alignment with project deliverables, timelines, organizational priorities, and business needs.
  • Coordinating with other application teams to resolve integration challenges and cross-functional barriers.
  • Ensuring operational leaders and subject matter experts participate in application design, configuration, workflow development, and testing.
  • Coordinating analyst participation in workgroups, meetings, and other customer-facing activities.
  • Ensuring new application functionality and corresponding workflows are incorporated into operational training plans.
  • Maintaining visibility and availability to team members through regular staff meetings, one-on-one meetings, coaching, and ongoing communication.
  • Providing timely, constructive feedback and supporting the professional growth and development of team members.
  • Completing performance appraisals and other people-management responsibilities in a timely manner.
  • Promoting a positive, collaborative culture focused on customer service, accountability, high performance, and work-life balance.
  • Communicating organizational, divisional, service-line, and health system updates and expectations to the team.
  • Appropriately escalating risks, concerns, and barriers to leadership.

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and professional experience.
  • A minimum of three years of relevant professional experience.
  • Leadership experience supporting the implementation of financial and/or clinical information systems or the large-scale, complex standardization and implementation of an enterprise EHR or application suite.
  • Strong understanding of application design, configuration, implementation, testing, optimization, and ongoing support.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master's degree in Healthcare, Information Technology, Business, or a related field.
  • Five to seven years of leadership experience within a healthcare setting.
  • Experience managing enterprise healthcare applications, EHR systems, or large application suites.
  • Experience partnering with application vendors during implementations, upgrades, optimization initiatives, and ongoing support.
  • Experience leading application teams through organizational, clinical, operational, or technology transformation.
  • Experience with workflow analysis, future-state process design, system integration, change management, and application optimization.
