About the Role

As Manager, Respiratory Care at Howard University Hospital - a designated Level 1 Trauma Center in the District of Columbia - you will lead the assessment, planning, direction, and evaluation of respiratory care services across the department. You will be accountable for the quality of patient care and for the processes that drive continuous performance improvement - spanning clinical practice, staff development, management and leadership, and consultation. Working alongside administration, physicians, and the multidisciplinary team, you will keep communication open and ensure effective processes for quality patient care and problem resolution.

What You'll Do
  • Assume responsibility and accountability for the oversight of day-to-day operations of the department.
  • Ensure the department's strategic plan, vision, and goals align with the HUH strategic plan, vision, mission, and goals; act as liaison between Respiratory Care, nursing administration, and medical staff; and foster positive, collaborative communication with other units and departments when resolving issues.
  • Manage staff, clinical orientations, education, competencies, quality improvement, staff meetings, and annual performance evaluations; establish and uphold standards of practice; monitor performance, behaviors, and competency; and set goals for the clinical team's skill development while ensuring compliance with The Joint Commission rules and regulations.
  • Participate in the development of departmental budgets, allocate funds to accomplish objectives, and monitor variance against budget.
  • Lead the recruitment, training, supervision, coaching, evaluation, and retention of staff, and implement performance improvement initiatives as needed.
  • Complete tasks for service recovery, complaints, near misses, and adverse events accurately and on time; participate in and monitor staff participation in patient rounds to optimize the patient experience and outcomes; and ensure all confidential records, reports, and statistics are accurate and properly maintained.
  • Serve as a role model and mentor to staff, promoting participation in process improvement and patient satisfaction initiatives, and assure compliance with federal, state, and local technical and professional regulations and accepted practice guidelines.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Respiratory Care or a related field; graduate of an accredited Respiratory Care degree program.
  • Five (5) years of experience as a practicing respiratory therapist.
  • Three (3) years of supervisory experience.
  • Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) credential from the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC).
  • Current District of Columbia Respiratory Care Practitioner (RCP) license.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification (AHA).
  • Advanced knowledge of respiratory theory, methodology, and techniques, along with performance improvement principles.
  • Demonstrated leadership, communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to prioritize, multitask, and make sound decisions under pressure.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification.
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification.

Pay & Schedule

This is a full-time, exempt position with a Monday-Friday day schedule. Pay range: $110,000-$121,000 annually, commensurate with experience and qualifications.
