Full Job Description
Your Role in Supporting Our Members:

As a Manager, Quality Engineering, you are accountable for delivering quality outcomes for a business workstream. You operate at the intersection of engineering, delivery, and business, ensuring that quality engineering execution translates into predictable, reliable, and production-ready outcomes.

This role goes beyond technical leadership-you are fully accountable for whether quality has been achieved, including release readiness, risk management, and visibility to stakeholders. You lead a team of QE Leads and SDETs, balancing delivery execution, people leadership, and technical oversight to ensure quality is embedded end-to-end in the delivery lifecycle.

This is a Full-time, Permanent role based at our Vancity Head Office and will report directly to the Director, Quality Engineering.

How You'll Make an Impact:

Quality Outcomes & Delivery Ownership

  • Owning end-to-end quality outcomes for a business workstream

  • Accountable for:

  • Release readiness and go-live decisions

  • Quality status, risk visibility, and mitigation

  • Predictability of delivery outcomes

  • Making trade-off decisions (coverage vs speed vs risk) aligned to business priorities

  • Ensuring quality engineering execution results in measurable business outcomes

Execution Leadership & Operating Model

  • Assisting with defining QE technical strategy and translate it into operational delivery plans

  • Defining and enforcing the quality operating model within your workstream:

  • Quality gates & CI/CD integration

  • Automation coverage expectations

  • Ensuring quality practices are embedded into day-to-day delivery execution

  • Driving continuous improvement in efficiency, cycle time, and defect leakage

People & Technical Leadership

  • Managing a team of QE Leads and SDETs

  • Balancing people leadership, delivery accountability, and technical oversight

  • Leading through technical depth and credibility, not just coordination

  • Building a strong QE culture focused on engineering excellence and accountability

Modern Quality Engineering Practices

  • Driving adoption of:

  • API-first testing approaches

  • Automation-first strategies (beyond UI-heavy testing)

  • Shift-left and CI/CD-integrated validation

  • Ensuring teams effectively implement automation frameworks and quality signals

  • Guiding teams in applying risk-based testing and outcome-driven validation

Partnership & Stakeholder Alignment

  • Building strong partnerships with Product, Engineering, and Delivery leaders

  • Providing clear, actionable visibility into quality status and risks

  • Aligning quality engineering execution with business priorities and delivery timelines

What You'll Bring to the Team:

Experience & Leadership

  • 12+ years of experience in software engineering, quality engineering, or related field

  • Demonstrated experience leading, managing and coaching teams of QE Leads and SDETs, with accountability for both delivery and people development

  • Proven experience owning delivery outcomes in complex, multi-team environments

Technical Expertise

  • Strong programming skills (Python, JavaScript, C#, Java), with the ability to review, guide, and challenge implementation decisions

  • Proven experience designing, evolving, and scaling automation frameworks across multiple teams

  • Deep experience in API-first testing and reducing reliance on UI-heavy approaches, ensuring alignment with modern delivery architecture

  • Experience with AI-powered testing approaches (LLMs, agentic and spec-driven automation), including evaluating where they are effective at scale

  • Strong experience integrating automation into CI/CD pipelines at a delivery system level (not just individual pipelines)

  • Proven capability in automated validation of non-functional requirements (performance, reliability, security) across environments

Quality Engineering Delivery & Decision-Making

  • Demonstrated ability to make delivery trade-offs (coverage vs. speed, risk vs. time-to-market, automation depth vs. execution efficiency)

  • Experience owning release readiness decisions, backed by clear quality signals and risk assessment

  • Strong understanding of quality gates, success criteria, and outcome-based validation models

  • Ability to ensure that execution across teams translates into predictable quality outcomes

Testing Frameworks & Platforms

  • Experience guiding teams on scalable automation frameworks across API, integration, and UI layers

  • Strong understanding of testing across REST and event-driven systems, distributed systems, microservices architectures

  • Familiarity with modern tooling (Playwright, Cypress, Postman, etc.), with the ability to drive standardization and effective usage across teams

Cloud, DevOps & Operating Model Integration

  • Experience working within cloud-native and distributed system environments (AWS or Azure, containers such as Docker/Kubernetes)

  • Strong understanding of how quality integrates into CI/CD pipelines, DevOps, and release engineering practices

  • Ability to define and enforce a quality operating model within business workstreams

Analytical & Outcome-Oriented Mindset

  • Data-driven approach to measuring and improving quality effectiveness and outcomes (defining and using delivery metrics and KPIs)

  • Experience interpreting data into clear insights to inform stakeholder decisions

Stakeholder & Delivery Leadership

  • Strong ability to partner with Product, Engineering, and Delivery leaders

  • Proven experience providing clear visibility into quality status, risks, and readiness

  • Ability to align teams around shared quality outcomes, not just execution activities

  • Strong communication skills in driving go/no-go and prioritization decisions

You'll Thrive Here If You Are:

  • Engineering-minded - Able to go deep technically, while elevating teams beyond individual contribution

  • Outcome-driven - Focused on delivering measurable quality outcomes, not just activities

  • Decisive - Comfortable making trade-offs under delivery pressure

  • Collaborative - Able to align multiple teams and stakeholders around quality outcomes

  • Accountable - Taking ownership for results and outcomes, not just execution

What You'll Earn:

This role offers a salary range of $125,000 to $169,000 per annum. The base pay offered may vary depending on factors such as relevant qualifications, skills, previous experience, and internal equity. As part of our total rewards package, employees may also be eligible for our annual incentive program, subject to program eligibility requirements.
