SUMMARY OF JOB RESPONSIBILITIES AND REQUIREMENTS

JOB TITLE: Manager or Sr. Manager Tax

DEPARTMENT: Corporate Tax - Kansas City Headquarters or Topeka General Office

LOCATION: Kansas City, MO

Topeka, KS

PAY RANGE: Mgr Tax: Minimum: $111,400 - Midpoint: $148,500

Sr Mgr Tax: Minimum: $130,300 - Midpoint: $173,700

Scheduled Work Hours: Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

Summary of Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

Manage the tax planning, research and compliance functions related to income taxes for the Company with a focus on minimizing the tax burden of the company.
• Develop tax legislative agenda and recommend Company's response to emerging tax legislation by identifying and evaluating material tax issues in proposed legislation and by supporting the Company's legislative position with external parties including state and local tax authorities and industry participants.
• Ensure Company compliance with all tax laws and regulations by supervising the timely and accurate preparation and filing of income tax returns.
• Support the Company's tax return positions through coordination and review of audits, filing of protests, and coordinating the activity of outside counsel or other advisors.
• Ensure proper recording of all income tax accounting data by providing accurate information for the Company's financial reports, budgets, and rate cases.
• Promote professional development of staff by providing training, participation in professional organizations, and efficient assignment of work.

Other functions include:
• Manages the preparation and filing of the Company's consolidated and separate federal, state and local income tax returns and payments.
• Researches income tax problems and tax questions for solutions, including interpretation of rules and proceedings.
• Coordinates income tax data for budget estimates and rate cases.
• Manages reports of activity, projected cash requirements and develops tax budgets for income taxes.
• Manages book income tax entries and keeps support for book income tax balances.
• Manages the preparation of various analyses and coordination of income tax audits.
• Responds to vendor-related tax matters associated with tax compliance or tax saving opportunities.
• Develops appropriate tax planning initiatives and recommendations to place the Company in the most effective income tax posture.
• Manage the income tax compliance activities to meet all external return filing due dates as mandated by the various governmental entities.
• Provides income tax advice to all corporate departments and locations where appropriate.
• Reviews income tax returns to ensure accurate presentation and legal compliance.
• Keeps current with new income tax laws, regulations, and positions taken by the major taxing authorities, determine their effect on the company and advises management of any major impacts.
• Develops income tax legislative initiatives.

Education & Experience Requirements:
• A Bachelor's degree with an emphasis in Accounting is required. MBA or advanced degree is preferred.
• Must possess at least 8 years of related experience in corporate, governmental, or public accounting and knowledge of federal, state and local income tax laws.
• Demonstrated experience in a leadership capacity, managing a team of people, setting direction, deploying resources is required.
• Must demonstrate the ability to contribute to the development of strategic plans and/or department strategy.

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities Required:
• Requires skills in leadership, motivation, team building and management of employees.
• Must have good working knowledge of federal, state and local income tax laws.
• Must have strong communication, interpersonal relations and analytical skills.
• The individual must be assertive and be able to prioritize and multi-task.
• Must be able to demonstrate sound judgment and be able to interact with tact, diplomacy, and logic.
• This position will require accuracy and timeliness on strict deadlines.

Licenses, Certifications, Bonding, and/or Testing Required:

CPA license with a permit to practice preferred.

Great Plains Energy Incorporated was a holding company based in Kansas City, Missouri that owned electric utility Kansas City Power and Light Company and Strategic Energy, LLC, an energy management company. KCP&L established the holding company on October 1, 2001. Great Plains acquired Aquila, Inc. in July, 2008. In 2014, it ranked #855 on the Fortune 1000 list. In 2016, Great Plains and Westar Energy announced merger plans, but this proposed merger was rejected by Kansas Corporation Commission utility regulators as unfavorable to Kansas consumers. A new merger plan with Westar was announced in 2017. As of May 24, 2018, this merger has been approved by both the Missouri Public Service Commission and Kansas regulators, with the combined company to be named Evergy. On October 7, 2019 the two operating companies officially changed names and rebranded to Evergy in the communities they serve.
