JOB DESCRIPTION
Primary Duties and ResponsibilitiesThe Manager of Nursing oversees the overall operations of a given specialty area or unit. This includes responsibility for patient care and safety, fiscal performance, staff performance, and productivity. It also includes assisting in managing quality improvement or safety initiatives, providing staff education, and ensuring staff follow policy and regulatory standards. The role develops and modifies procedures to run unit optimally. Responsible for continual improvement of patient care and prevention of harm. Focusses on continually enhancing patient outcomes and improving care. May provide direct patient care as needed.
The Manager of Nursing serves as a leader and mentor to staff and promotes professional growth and development. This role creates a collaborative environment conducive to sharing ideas and opinions. In conjunction with the Department Director, the Manager of Nursing develops the vision and goals for the unit, cascades those goals to staff, and assists the department in accomplishing them. As many areas operate 24/7 this role requires meetings and rounding outside of normal business hours including evenings/nights and/or weekends. Performs other duties as assigned.
JOB QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience
- Nursing Managers at Magnet Facilities only are required to have a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN).
- Bachelor of Science (BSN) and Masters of Science in Nursing (MSN) preferred.
- Five (5) years of acute nursing experience, preferably in specialty area, and two (2) years of nursing leadership experience required. Home Health ONLY - unless the individual has been previously approved for such employment by a program flexibility issued for the individual’s current position at the home health agency prior to April 1, 1995.
- Experience in Kronos, Optilink, and Microsoft Suite preferred.
Additionally, department specific requirements are as follows:
- Acute Rehabilitation Center: Minimum of three (3) years of experience in an acute rehabilitation setting required.
- Home Health: Must be a licensed driver with an automobile that is insured in accordance with state and/or organization requirements and is in good working order.
- Hospice: Understands hospice philosophy and issues of death/dying. Understands principles of pain/symptom management. Must be a licensed driver with an automobile that is insured in accordance with state and/or organization requirements and is in good working order.
- Main Operating Room: Minimum of two years of Operating Room experience in clinical service line required.
- Radiology: Active participation in a professional nursing organization (i.e. ARIN) preferred.
License Required
- Registered Nurse (RN) in the State of California - Current and in good standing.
License Preferred
Certifications Required
- BLS issued from the American Heart Association (AHA).

- Acute Rehabilitation Center: Certified Rehabilitation Registered Nurse (CRRN)
- Heart and Vascular Institute (HVI): ACLS
- HOI Surgery Center (OSCOC): ACLS and PALS
- PACU: ACLS and PALS
- Radiology: ACLS
- Women’s COE: NRP
Certifications Preferred
- Hoag Orthopedic Institute: CNOR
- Operating Room: CNOR
- PACU: ASPAN Certification
- Pulmonary and Oncology: Chemotherapy/Biotherapy Provider Card, ANCC Certification (i.e. ONC, PCCN, CMSRN)
- Radiology: Certified Radiology Nurse (CRN)
