Position overview

As the Manager, Internal Communications, you will lead the development and execution of strategic internal communication initiatives that drive employee engagement, foster alignment with YVR's mission and values, and promote a culture of transparency and collaboration.

Reporting to the Head of Communications and working in close collaboration with the People and Culture Department, the successful candidate will be responsible for building YVR's internal communications function from the ground up. This includes designing and implementing a comprehensive internal communications framework, establishing cross-departmental communication protocols, and identifying the right tools and technologies-both backend systems and employee-facing platforms-to support consistent and effective messaging across the organization.

You will play a key role in shaping how information flows within YVR, ensuring that employees are informed, connected, and inspired. Additionally, you will support the Communications, Content, and Design team during issues, crisis situations, and irregular operations as a member of the Communications Operations Centre (COC).

Key responsibilities include:
  • Develop and implement a refreshed internal communications strategy that modernizes how YVR engages with employees, including protocols, roles, tactics, and the use of effective communication platforms and in-person channels
  • Lead the execution of internal communications activities that inform, engage, and connect employees, while coordinating with departments such as People and Culture to ensure alignment and consistency
  • Oversee internal communications platforms and technologies, including OurYVR, and collaborate with IT and other teams to evaluate and implement tools that enhance communication effectiveness
  • Ensure brand consistency across internal channels by managing the use of YVR's brand assets and working with the design team to maintain up-to-date templates and materials
  • Foster cross-functional collaboration by building strong relationships with internal teams and ensuring internal communications reflect diverse voices and organizational updates
  • Support crisis and issues communications by contributing to internal messaging, identifying risks, updating the Crisis Communications Plan, and providing 24/7 support as part of the Communications Operations Centre (COC)
  • Lead and develop a high-performing team, including setting goals, coaching, performance management, and supporting professional growth and development

Key qualifications include:
  • Minimum 5 years of progressive experience in internal or corporate communications, preferably in a complex or unionized environment, including at least 3 years of leadership or team management experience, and supplemented by a bachelor's degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism or a related field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Proven experience in leading communication strategies and managing cross-functional and cross-departmental projects, including developing or supporting technology solutions to complement those strategies and reach key audiences.
  • Strong knowledge of digital communication platforms and tools, such as SharePoint, content management systems (CMS), and email marketing platforms
  • Demonstrated experience utilizing a range of content tools such as video, social media, media relations, and others to most effectively deliver messages and meeting communications objectives.
  • Demonstrated ability to translate complex information into clear, engaging messages and proactively enhance employee communication across diverse audiences and work environments
  • Proven ability to make strategic decisions on communication priorities, tone, and timing, with experience advising senior leaders on internal messaging and change communications, and driving continuous improvement through data-informed insights
  • Knowledge of the incident command structure and experience supporting Communications Operations Centre (COC) functions, preferably within YVR's crisis communications and incident response, or equivalent experience in a similar operational environment.

To support the Communications Department's 24/7 monitoring of media and social media activity, the Manager, Internal Communications will be required to participate in a rotating on-call schedule, ensuring they remain in town and accessible to respond as needed.
