A DAY IN THE LIFE

As a Manager Engineering 6 Instrumentation and Controls Engineering, you will be responsible for the instrumentation and controls engineering program for the company's gas generation segment; with an emphasis on reciprocating engine and aeroderivative gas turbine generating facilities and the associated balance of plant equipment. You'll act as the company program engineering representative from proposal stage through execution, helping define company engineering and gas business plans for the gas generation segment, and ensuring that all final engineering products meet client reliability, operability, and constructability requirements. The Manager Engineering 6 Instrumentation and Controls Engineering, must have strong technical knowledge and experience in the technologies used in gas generation(including balance of plant) design, be program management and process oriented, and must have strong interpersonal and leadership skills.

STEP INTO THE ROLE

  • Company program engineering representative during all phases from conception through construction completion of gas generation pursuits. As the company program manager, responsibility will include interactions with Blattner Business Units, reciprocating engine and gas turbine generator suppliers, balance of plant equipment providers, to establish long lasting relationships.
  • Understand client design criteria and intent, and determine how clients and the energy market are evolving on design trends, philosophy, and criteria on gas generation plant design.
  • Will travel to Client office and/or project sites as required to foster client relationships, idea propagation, and problem solving.
  • Builds an understanding of the strategic dynamics that are essential to the gas generation market.
  • Coordinates and supports engineering activities, making detailed plans to accomplish goals and directing the integration of client and company technical activities. Works with clients to ensure the company and client understand design standards and philosophies for processes.
  • Participates in defining the Company engineering and gas business plans necessary goals and actions for the gas generation segment.
  • Develops and facilitates safety standards for the gas generation Engineering program and Company.
  • Ensures projects are designed and constructed in compliance with all applicable and prudent industry standards, including those provisions specific to reciprocating engine and combustion turbine installations and fuel gas systems.
  • Root cause analysis expert for Engineering and Instrumentation and Controls items of the Company.
  • Develop and implement consistent policies, standards, and procedures for the Program management; specifically regarding engineering design standards utilized by Company for reciprocating engine and gas turbine generating facilities. Implement guardrails specific to design philosophy and criteria within Company Program.
  • Owns the design basis for all power block instrumentation and controls. Collaborates and ensures integration with Blattner Business Units responsible for electrical design for generators and services. This includes protection and generation control, generator step-up and auxiliary transformers, medium voltage switchgear and collection, generator protection and synchronizing, station service and emergency power, grounding and lightning protection, cable and raceway systems, and lighting.
  • Owns the design basis for all balance of plant instrumentation and controls. Collaborates and ensures integration with Blattner Business Units responsible for electrical design for power to equipment. Reviews electrical interface design for balance of plant equipment, including fuel gas conditioning and compression, inlet air and filtration systems, lube oil and cooling systems, water treatment, cooling systems, emissions control equipment, fire protection and detection, and plant control system integration.
  • Stays current on new technologies and industry practices. Seeks opportunities to add value to projects with application of best available technology for specific projects. Performs economic analysis / value engineering to determine cost effective solutions and prepare recommendations to procurement team.
  • Analyzes technology, resource needs, and market demands to plan and assess the feasibility of projects and engineering initiatives.
  • Facilitates creation and maintains library of design basis documents for all segments within Company. Must ensure Managers of Procurement are current with design basis for client and scope of work prior to kick-off meeting of estimating new project.
  • Be an available technical resource to support engineering leads review of owner, contractor, and company scopes for completeness, and note gaps or overlaps, with particular attention to the terminal points between the generating equipment supplier, balance of plant vendors, and company scope.
  • Supports constructability reviews of engine and turbine power block layouts, modular and skid-mounted equipment, and pre-assembled cable and conduit systems to reduce field labor and improve installation quality.
  • Supports the instrumentation and controls requirements of plant startup, first fire, synchronization, and performance testing, and ensures commissioning needs are reflected in the design.
  • Verifies and owns complete protection and controls for power block and BOP.
  • Acts as the escalation point for instrumentation and controls commissioning issues, including protection and control settings, monitoring systems, controls testing, and controller interfaces.
  • Preliminary engineering to final review of design, installation, and commissioning for power generation block and BOP instrumentation and controls.
    • Redundancy of instrumentation, controls hardware, and logic design
    • Winterization for instrumentation and control devices

    • Controls narratives and logic
  • Owner of all controller communication protocol and interface design, including distributed control system (DCS) at power block level.
  • Owner of data historian configuration and representation of available data points, including internally configured points. This includes ensuring DCS provides points for historian.

WHAT YOU9LL NEED

  • Four-year Engineering degree in electrical or mechanical engineering from an ABET accredited college
  • 5+ of progressive engineering experience in gas power generation, with two or more years of leadership experience.
  • Registered Professional Engineering (PE) license is strongly preferred.
  • Must have a valid driver9s license and an acceptable motor vehicle driving record (MVR).
  • Up to 25% travel required, subject to fluctuations as needs dictate.

WHAT SETS YOU APART

  • Knowledge of reciprocating engine and gas turbine equipment and the associated balance of plant equipment and their applications.
  • Knowledge of multiple communication protocols and integration of same 6 MODBUS, Profi-Bus, Foundation Field-Bus, etc.
  • Civil, Mechanical-Instrumentation and Controls, and Electrical power engineering principles and familiarity with computer and analytical tools as they relate to equipment sizing, construction design, 3-D Modeling.
  • Familiarity with computer tools/programs used for instrumentation and controls programming and commissioning 6 communications protocols, vibrations monitoring, instrumentation programming and calibration, transformer monitoring.
  • Familiarity with Continuous Emissions Monitoring Systems (CEMS) specifications, regulatory protocols, equipment, commissioning, and certification.
  • Familiarity with Emissions Control Systems 6 primarily Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) specifications, regulatory requirements, equipment, controls design, commissioning, and safety compliance.
  • Familiarity with engineering standards/best practices related to power generation.
  • Interpersonal skills 6 ability to influence and persuade groups toward common objectives.
  • Effective communication skills (oral, written, listening, presentation) to work with owners, vendors, and employees.
