Job Summary

The base location for this position is flexible within the Duke Energy Florida Fleet.

This position plans, directs and manages the health and safety function in the appropriate group within the Health & Safety (H&S) organization. Recognizes, evaluates, recommends and implements policies and procedures to assure awareness of and compliance with H&S requirements of the organization. Responsibilities include management of, as appropriate, groups of H&S subject matter experts, field support, or other H&S professionals. Effectively manages procedures, processes or programs including cross-cutting workflow, strategic planning and H&S Policy and Management System implementation. Duties include management and leadership of employees, strategic direction & goal alignment, planning, budgeting, performance management, integration, customer service and human resource issues.

Responsibilities
  • Manage assigned group within H&S functions, including strategic planning, budgeting, performance management, employee development and human resource issues. Develop processes, policy and related guidance; establish strategies, goals and performance expectations through collaboration within the department and with customers and stakeholders. Build H&S management system implementation capacity through leadership in mentoring and best practice sharing, assessing enterprise and business unit performance, and communicating plans and results to management and external stakeholders.
  • Work with departmental H&S leadership to develop common strategy and direction for the assigned group and achieve desired results. Provide leadership to identify, evaluate and focus on consistent H&S approaches and strategies to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements, to identify and manage H&S risks. Ensure conformance, effective integration and implementation of the H&S Policy and Management System.
  • Build effective relationships with management. Interface with internal customers, internal and external stakeholders, and others as appropriate for the position to ensure that the functions assigned to the group are provided and delivered as expected and in a cost-effective manner. Ensure strategic alignment of the H&S function with other groups in the company.


Basic/Required Qualifications
  • Bachelors degree in Safety, Engineering or Science
  • Minimum 7 years related work experience
  • In lieu of Bachelors degree and 7 year's experience, High School/GED and 15 years related work experience.

  • Outstanding interpersonal skills (e.g., influencing and listening skills to deal effectively with all levels of employees and management).
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Broad knowledge of appropriate H&S and department programs and procedures.
  • Ability to analyze data and develop appropriate strategic responses.
  • Excellent problem solving skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple initiatives or work groups in multiple locations
  • More than ten years experience in power generation or transmission/distribution operations.
  • Experience in interfacing with and influencing regulatory agencies at the local, state and federal level
  • Understands inter-departmental relationships and processes
  • Demonstrates personal accountability for own actions while modeling company values
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with others from diverse backgrounds to achieve common goals
  • Consistently delivers superior results while improving products, services and processes
  • Performs at the highest level to deliver value to customers and other stakeholders
