Job Description

Nemours is seeking a Manager, Formula/Milk Technician (Full-Time), to join our Nemours Children's Health team in Wilmington, DE.

This position is responsible for: Oversight of the preparation, distribution, inventory, record keeping and ordering of all patient formula, maternal human milk, and fortified and/or pasteurized donor milk in collaboration with the Clinical Nutrition team. This role ensures specialized nutrition services meet the highest standards of safety, accuracy, and patient-centered care for vulnerable pediatric and neonatal populations. The Formula/Human Milk Room Manager oversees the day-to-day operations of the formula/milk processes, ensures adherence to standards, develops systems and processes, supervises personnel, and coordinates with other disciplines and departments to achieve the mission and goals of the department in collaboration with the Director, Clinical Nutrition Services.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
  • Oversight of all activities associated with preparation and delivery of human milk, pasteurized donor human milk, and formula by establishing processes to provide optimal nutrition support to patients that is safe, cost effective, and appropriate.
  • Coordinate production schedule based on projected staffing patterns and workloads.
  • Supervise the formula and human milk room technicians in completing daily duties ensuring accuracy, technique, and productivity. Identify and resolve milk and formula room service problems and function in the role of formula and milk technician when necessary.
  • Follow the standards of formula preparation as described in the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics "Infant and Pediatric Feedings: Guidelines for Preparation of Human Milk and Formula in Health Care Facilities".
  • Recognize age-related factors that may contribute to formula choices. Recognize and interpret instructions for changes in formula and milk orders.
  • Maintain aseptic technique during formula/milk preparation and delivery. Maintain sanitation in formula room area.
  • Inventory and maintain sufficient formula/milk/supplies stock. Track purchases and seek opportunities for effective management of formula/milk room resources. Communicate with formula representatives as needed to maintain stock. Oversee reimbursement of unusable formula.
  • Remain knowledgeable of HIPAA, TJC, CMS and OSHA safety regulations and perform routine internal audits to ensure compliance. Monitor strict adherence to infection control, HACCP guidelines and sanitation regulations to prevent cross contamination.
  • With the Director, Clinical Nutrition, participate in interviewing and hiring process of milk/formula room staff. Oversee training of new milk/formula technicians. Maintain competencies of formula/milk room staff.
  • With the Director, Clinical Nutrition, establish and manage team performance goals for formula/milk technicians. Monitor day-to-day operations to assure adherence to regulatory requirements and Nemours policies and procedures. Monitor, investigate, and analyze formula/milk variances via incident report system.
  • With the Director, Clinical Nutrition, establish the departmental budget and is accountable for adhering to the financial management of these budgets. Participates in departmental strategic planning. Assists with budget preparation annually, reviews compliance at established intervals. Oversee product use and allow for billing of donor milk and donor milk additives. Oversee equipment function and repairs; participate in capital budget requests
  • Support those concepts and philosophies of patient and family centered care. Participates in building a culture where all associates focus efforts on discovering and meeting patient needs and expectations in a manner that provides satisfaction for the family and enhances superior clinical and service outcomes. Adheres to Nemours Standards of Behavior.
  • Fulfills continuing education requirements to maintain registration through the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND) as a Registered Dietitian (RD), State Licensure, and additional specialty certification (CNSC, CSP, etc.), as applicable

Job Requirements
  • Bachelor's Degree in Nutrition and Dietetics required.
  • Registered Dietitian (RD/RDN) credential through the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics preferred.
  • Licensed Dietitian/Nutritionist (LDN) in Delaware, when applicable to the profession.
  • OR: International Board-Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) with managerial/supervisory experience and expertise in human milk and formula management.
  • OR: Other licensed or certified healthcare professionals with an appropriate clinical background, leadership experience, and demonstrated knowledge of formula preparation, human milk management, regulatory compliance, and pediatric/neonatal nutrition support.
  • Minimum one (1) years of experience is required.
  • American Heart Association BLS Certification is required.
  • Previous supervisory experience or lead position strongly preferred.
  • Experience in pediatric, neonatal, maternal-child health, nutrition services, or milk/formula room operations preferred.
  • Nutrition education, diet knowledge or infant nutrition knowledge preferred
  • Healthcare experience preferred
