Join our dynamic Infectious Disease Team located in San Diego, California, as a Manager, Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS).The
Manager, Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) serves as the site leader responsible for developing, implementing, and continuously improving Environmental, Health, Safety, and Occupational Health programs for a research and development facility. This role provides strategic direction and technical expertise to ensure regulatory compliance, protect employees and the environment, and foster a proactive safety culture that enables innovation and operational excellence. As the site's EHS subject matter expert, the Manager partners with R&D, Facilities, Engineering, and corporate functions to identify and mitigate risks, support business objectives, and ensure compliance with applicable environmental, health, and safety regulations and corporate standards.
This is a 100% on-site role.What You'll Work On - Lead all site EHS programs, policies, and management systems to ensure regulatory compliance and effective risk management.
- Serve as the primary liaison with regulatory agencies, auditors, and corporate EHS teams.
- Manage environmental permitting, reporting, inspections, audits, and regulatory submissions.
- Develop and execute the site's EHS strategy, objectives, and continuous improvement initiatives aligned with business goals.
- Conduct risk assessments and provide EHS support for laboratory operations, process changes, facility modifications, capital projects, and new equipment installations.
- Lead investigations of incidents, near misses, and environmental events; perform root cause analysis and drive corrective and preventive actions.
- Develop and deliver EHS training programs that promote employee awareness, regulatory compliance, and a strong culture of safety.
- Monitor emerging regulations, industry trends, and best practices, evaluating potential impacts to site operations.
- Establish and track EHS performance metrics and communicate results and recommendations to site leadership.
- Ensure site procedures, emergency preparedness plans, and EHS documentation remain accurate, effective, and audit ready.
- Influence and collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate EHS considerations into operational and business decisions.
- Serve as a trained backup resource for material handling operations during planned and unplanned absences of the Material Handler, providing support for critical shipping, receiving, hazardous material, and waste management activities while maintaining compliance with applicable regulations.
- Maintain current knowledge and required training in U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) and International Air Transport Association (IATA) regulations to support the compliant packaging, handling, and shipment of hazardous materials and dangerous goods.
- Support and ensure compliance with California Environmental Regulations (CERs) and other applicable environmental requirements, including hazardous waste management, storage, transportation, reporting, and recordkeeping activities.
General Accountability- This position is accountable for the overall EHS performance, regulatory compliance, environmental stewardship, audit readiness, and safety culture of the site.
Required Qualifications - Bachelor's Degree in Environmental Science, Occupational Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Engineering, Chemistry, Biology or a related technical discipline or equivalent combination of education and experience
- 7+ years of progressive Environmental, Health & Safety experience in research, laboratory, life sciences, engineering, pharmaceutical, biotechnology, medical device, or other regulated environment.
- Experience managing environmental compliance programs, regulatory inspections, audits, and permitting activities.
- Experience conducting risk assessments, incident investigations, and implementing corrective actions.
Preferred Qualifications- Experience serving as the primary EHS leader for a site or business unit.
- Experience supporting laboratory and R&D operations.
- Professional certification such as CSP, CIH, CHMM, or equivalent.

The base pay for this position is $114,000.00 - $228,000.00
In specific locations, the pay range may vary from the range posted.
