Manager, CPD Lip Makeup Development, L'Oréal Research & Innovation - Clark, New Jersey

A Day in the Life: As the Manager for the CPD Lip Makeup Development Team, you will lead a team of chemists and take accountability for all elements of lip product development from initial concept to post-market resolution. Your responsibilities include:
  • Team Leadership & Development: Directly manage, mentor, and coach your team of chemists. You will run performance evaluations, create strategic development plans, and provide technical guidance to ensure a culture of high performance and quality compliance.
  • Innovation & Strategic Execution: Spearhead the creation of new formulas, adapting departmental plans and utilizing advanced tracking systems (such as E-cockpit) to manage product launches successfully, on time, and within budget.
  • Driving Digital Transformation: Empower the team to adopt digital-forward tools and predictive processes to enhance innovation and efficiency within the lab environment.
  • Strategic Problem-Solving: Apply deep scientific formulation expertise and creativity to anticipate and resolve complex formulation, stability, and scale-up challenges, ensuring product robustness.
  • Collaboration & Strategic Influence: Build strong, collaborative relationships with local and global brand partners, coordinate international launches, and present technical updates to senior leadership to drive strategic business decisions.
  • Safety & Quality Culture: Foster a strong quality compliance culture and maintain a safe, organized, and high-performing laboratory environment.


We Are Looking For: You are an inspiring people developer, an agile collaborator, and a skilled formulation expert who thrives in a fast-paced, highly matrixed global organization.
  • Education: A completed Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or a related scientific discipline is required; a Master's degree or Ph.D. is a plus.
  • Experience:
    • 5-7+ years' experience in cosmetic formulation development, with a strong preference and track record in color cosmetics or the lip category.
    • Proven experience managing projects from initial concept through to successful scale-up and industrial launch.
    • Demonstrated experience in a leadership capacity, guiding, mentoring, and upskilling other chemists.
  • Skills & Attributes:
    • People Development: Proven ability to lead and motivate a team through effective coaching, performance management, and fostering team engagement.
    • Strategic Stakeholder Management: The ability to influence and build strong partnerships with cross-functional teams, both locally and globally.
    • Agility & Problem Solving: A creative approach to solving complex formulation challenges and the agility to navigate rapidly changing priorities.
    • Communication: Strong interpersonal, presentation, and storytelling skills to effectively communicate technical concepts to diverse audiences.
    • Product Evaluation: Must be willing to apply and wear lip products daily as an essential part of the formulation evaluation process.
  • The ability to be onsite, in the office at least 3 days a week as this is an essential function of the position (required)
  • Authorization to work in the United States on a full-time, permanent, ongoing basis is required. No immigration support/sponsorship offered for this role.

  • Base Salary Range: $107,600 - $153,000 (The actual compensation will depend on a variety of job-related factors which may include geographic location, work experience, education, and skill level)
