Manager, Commercial Accounting

The Manager, Commercial Accounting will be responsible for overseeing accounting activities related to product revenue, gross-to-net reserves, accounts receivable, inventory and cost of goods sold, and other commercial related accounting processes. The role will partner closely with Trade & Distribution, Market Access, CMC, and third-party partners to ensure accurate financial reporting and support commercialization efforts. The Manager will also be responsible for identifying and driving process improvement.

Key Responsibilities:

Revenue Accounting & Month-End Close
  • Manage the monthly close process related to product revenue, gross-to-net reserves, accounts receivable, and related commercial accounting activities.
  • Prepare and review journal entries, account reconciliations, and supporting schedules for revenue-related accounts.
  • Ensure revenue recognition is recorded in accordance with ASC 606.
  • Maintain accurate documentation supporting revenue accounting conclusions and estimates.

Inventory & Cost Accounting
  • Manage monthly close activities related to inventory and cost of goods sold.
  • Oversee inventory accounting activities, including inventory valuation, inventory reserves, inventory reconciliations, and related accounting analyses.
  • Review inventory reports and activity received from third-party logistics providers (3PLs) and ensure accurate recording of inventory transactions.
  • Monitor inventory movements, adjustments, write-offs, product returns, and related reserve calculations.
  • Partner with Trade and Distribution, CMC, and external partners to investigate and resolve inventory discrepancies.
  • Support physical inventory count procedures and related reconciliations performed by third-party providers.

Gross-to-Net Accounting
  • Prepare and maintain gross-to-net reserve calculations, including rebates, chargebacks, returns, prompt pay discounts, distribution service fees, copay assistance programs, and other commercial deductions.
  • Collaborate with Market Access, Government Pricing, and Commercial teams to ensure accurate reserve methodologies and assumptions.
  • Perform periodic actual-to-estimate analyses and recommend adjustments to reserve methodologies as needed.

Accounts Receivable & Order-to-Cash
  • Serve as the primary accounting liaison with third-party logistics providers (3PLs), distributors, and other commercial partners, ensuring timely and accurate transaction processing and reporting.
  • Oversee third-party managed order-to-cash activities, including product sales, invoicing, collections, cash applications, deductions, and dispute resolution.
  • Ensure timely reconciliation of accounts receivable balances, including oversight of information received from 3PLs and commercial partners.
  • Review customer balances, aging reports, collection activities, and related reporting provided by commercial partners and third-party service providers.
  • Support the evaluation of customer credit risk, credit limits, and related mitigation strategies in coordination with commercial and finance leadership.

Commercial and Launch Support
  • Partner with Market Access, CMC and Trade & Distribution teams to support commercialization initiatives and product launches.
  • Assist in the design and implementation of processes and controls supporting new distribution channels, customer programs, and launch activities.
  • Support contract reviews and assess accounting implications of commercial arrangements.

Financial Reporting & Compliance
  • Prepare schedules and analyses supporting quarterly and annual financial reporting requirements.
  • Assist with external audits and regulatory reporting requirements.
  • Develop and maintain policies, procedures, and accounting documentation related to revenue accounting.
  • Support SOX compliance efforts, including control execution, documentation, and remediation activities.

Process Improvement & Systems
  • Identify opportunities to improve efficiency, automation, reporting, and data analytics across the revenue accounting cycle.
  • Participate in ERP implementation, system enhancements, and integration projects.

Leadership & People Management

Qualifications:

Required
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance. CPA preferred.
  • 8+ years of progressive accounting experience, including experience in supporting commercial accounting activities in the biotechnology, pharmaceutical or life sciences industry.
  • Strong understanding of US GAAP, including ASC 606 revenue recognition, gross-to-net, inventory and cost of goods sold accounting
  • Strong understanding of pharmaceutical order-to-cash processes and related accounting activities, including accounts receivable, deductions, customer reconciliations.
  • Experience supporting inventory accounting in a commercial-stage biotechnology, pharmaceutical, or life sciences company.
  • Experience working with third-party logistics providers (3PLs), wholesalers, and other commercial service providers.
  • Experience with month-end close, account reconciliations, and financial reporting.
  • Experience with NetSuite or other large ERP systems.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills.

Preferred
  • Public accounting experience and/or publicly traded company experience
  • Experience supporting SOX compliance and internal controls.

Travel

US Salary Range: $134,000 to $145,000
