Full Job Description
MITRE's Benefits & Wellbeing department supports the health, wellbeing, and financial security of our employees through comprehensive programs and services across the employee lifecycle. The team is responsible for MITRE's health and welfare benefits, retirement programs, wellbeing, leave and disability programs, and relocation services.

Benefits & Wellbeing partners across MITRE to deliver programs that are competitive, compliant, and responsive to employee needs. The department focuses on providing a high-quality employee experience by making benefits and services accessible, understandable, and easy to navigate, while ensuring effective program administration and responsible stewardship of MITRE resources.

The Manager, Benefits & Compliance is a key leadership role within MITRE's Benefits & Wellbeing organization, responsible for overseeing the management, compliance, and delivery of MITRE's benefits programs, including health and welfare, retirement, relocation, and wellbeing.

Reporting to the Senior Manager, Benefits & Wellbeing, this role leads the teams responsible for benefits program management and translates Benefits & Wellbeing strategy into operational priorities and effective execution. The Manager oversees program and vendor performance, manages compliance and operational risk, and drives continuous improvement.

A key focus of the role is delivering a high-quality employee experience by ensuring benefits programs are administered effectively and are accessible, understandable, and easy to navigate.

Roles & Responsibilities:
  • Lead the Benefits & Compliance team, establishing clear priorities, expectations, and accountability for program delivery and results.
  • Oversee the management and administration of MITRE's health and welfare, retirement, relocation, wellbeing, and related benefits programs.
  • Translate Benefits & Wellbeing strategy and direction into operational priorities and lead the implementation of approved program changes and initiatives.
  • Ensure programs are administered in accordance with plan provisions, MITRE policies, regulatory requirements, and established service expectations.
  • Provide leadership and subject matter expertise for benefits compliance and governance, including required controls, audits, testing, filings, notices, and documentation.
  • Monitor legislative and regulatory developments, assess risks and operational impacts, and partner with Legal and other stakeholders to ensure readiness and compliance.
  • Oversee MITRE's retirement programs, including administration, compliance, governance and fiduciary processes, required testing and filings, vendor performance, and employee support.
  • Manage day-to-day relationships with benefits consultants, carriers, administrators, recordkeepers, and other partners; monitor performance, resolve issues, and hold vendors accountable for service quality and employee experience.
  • Ensure benefits programs and processes are accessible and easy to navigate and lead the resolution of complex employee issues and escalations.
  • Oversee annual enrollment and other major program cycles, ensuring operational readiness, effective execution, and coordination with Benefits Communications & Operations.
  • Monitor program performance, employee feedback, and operational data to identify risks, trends, and opportunities for continuous improvement.
  • Build strong partnerships across HR, HRIS, Legal, Finance, Payroll, Procurement and other teams to support effective benefits delivery.
  • Serve as a trusted advisor on complex benefits, operational, and compliance matters, elevating broader policy, design, financial, or enterprise implications to Benefits & Wellbeing leadership.
  • Lead, coach, and develop benefits professionals, building team capability and fostering a collaborative, accountable, and inclusive environment.
  • Support effective management of program resources and assigned budgets.


Basic Qualifications:
  • Typically requires a minimum of 10 years of related experience with a Bachelor's degree; 8 years with a Master's degree; or 5 years with a PhD; or an equivalent combination of related education and work experience.
  • Significant progressive experience in employee benefits, total rewards, or a related field, including complex health and welfare and retirement programs.
  • Demonstrated experience leading and developing benefits professionals and/or people leaders.
  • Strong knowledge of benefits laws, regulations, and compliance requirements, including ERISA and applicable federal and state requirements.
  • Experience with retirement plan administration, governance, compliance, and fiduciary processes.
  • Experience overseeing benefits operations and translating strategic direction into effective execution.
  • Experience managing benefits vendors, including consultants, carriers, administrators, and recordkeepers.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead complex cross-functional work, manage competing priorities, and navigate complex or ambiguous issues.
  • Strong communication, collaboration, and influencing skills with a focus on delivering a high-quality employee experience.
  • This position requires a minimum of 3 days per week on-site


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience supporting benefits for a large, complex, or geographically dispersed workforce.
  • Experience with self-funded health and welfare programs.
  • Experience overseeing significant benefits implementations, vendor transitions, annual enrollment cycles, or operational transformations.
  • Experience with complex retirement programs and associated governance processes.
  • Experience with HRIS platforms, particularly Workday.

Salary compensation range and midpoint:
$141,200 - $176,500 - $211,800 Annual
