Full Job Description
Laboratory Facilities Supervisor - JLL

What this job involves:

The Laboratory Facilities Supervisor is a specialized leadership role focused on maintaining the complex infrastructure that enables critical research and laboratory operations. You'll oversee mission-critical utility systems, environmental controls, and specialized laboratory equipment that researchers depend on daily-from compressed air and specialty gases to fume hood exhaust systems and cleanroom environments. This position requires a unique blend of technical facilities expertise and deep understanding of laboratory operational requirements, where system failures can compromise research integrity and safety. As the facilities leader for laboratory environments, you'll coordinate preventive maintenance programs, manage vendor relationships, ensure regulatory compliance, and provide emergency response support to keep research activities running smoothly. Working at the intersection of facilities management and scientific operations, you'll collaborate with laboratory personnel, safety teams, and technical vendors to solve complex challenges. If you're an experienced facilities professional ready to apply your skills in a high-stakes environment where precision and reliability are paramount, this role offers the opportunity to directly support groundbreaking research while advancing your career in specialized facilities management.

What your day-to-day will look like:

Oversee and maintain critical laboratory utility systems including compressed air, vacuum systems, specialty gases, water purification systems, and electrical distribution by monitoring system performance, coordinating repairs or upgrades, and ensuring adequate capacity and redundancy to prevent operational disruptions.

Supervise heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems specific to laboratory requirements including fume hood exhaust systems, cleanroom environments, and temperature-sensitive storage areas while monitoring air quality, pressure differentials, and filtration systems to maintain proper laboratory conditions and safety standards.

Coordinate comprehensive preventive maintenance schedules for all hard services equipment supporting laboratory operations by working closely with vendors and internal teams to ensure timely completion of maintenance activities while minimizing impact on ongoing research.

Provide on-call emergency response support for critical utility failures affecting laboratory operations, responding rapidly to equipment malfunctions, power outages, or environmental system failures while coordinating emergency repairs and implementing temporary solutions to maintain laboratory functionality.

Ensure all facility systems meet applicable codes, regulations, and safety standards for laboratory environments by maintaining documentation for inspections, testing, and certifications while collaborating with safety teams to identify and address facility-related hazards proactively.

Required Qualifications:
  • Minimum 3 years of facilities management experience with at least 2 years specifically in laboratory, research, pharmaceutical, or other highly regulated scientific environments.
  • Proven supervisory or leadership experience managing technical teams including responsibility for work coordination, performance management, and team development in facilities operations.
  • Strong technical knowledge of building automation systems (BAS), HVAC controls, electrical distribution systems, and plumbing infrastructure with ability to troubleshoot complex facility issues.
  • Working knowledge of building codes, OSHA regulations, and laboratory-specific safety standards including requirements for chemical storage, ventilation, and emergency systems.
  • Demonstrated leadership and communication skills with ability to effectively interface with laboratory personnel, research staff, vendors, management, and regulatory authorities while translating technical concepts for diverse audiences.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Facilities Management, Building Science, or related technical field, or equivalent combination of education and progressive facilities experience.
  • Hands-on experience with computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS) and building automation platforms for work order management, preventive maintenance scheduling, and system monitoring.
  • Familiarity with laboratory-specific equipment and systems including fume hoods, biosafety cabinets, specialty gas distribution systems, laboratory-grade water purification, and cleanroom technology.
  • Experience coordinating and overseeing external contractors and service providers for specialized laboratory equipment maintenance with ability to evaluate vendor performance and ensure work quality meets stringent laboratory standards.
  • Track record of successfully managing emergency response situations in critical environments where downtime directly impacts operations, research integrity, or safety.
