POSITION SUMMARY

The Maintenance Superintendent is responsible for leading and overseeing site maintenance activities, including the Maintenance Supervisor, Maintenance Leadman, mechanics, and rolling stock maintenance crew. This position provides direction for mechanical maintenance, preventative and predictive maintenance programs, equipment reliability, safety performance, budgeting, resource planning, and continuous improvement across mill operations, field and pond areas, loadout facilities, mobile equipment, and rolling stock. The Maintenance Superintendent works closely with operations, planning, engineering, production, field, and loadout teams to ensure maintenance work is planned, prioritized, completed safely, and aligned with operational goals.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Provide leadership, direction, and accountability for the Maintenance Leadman, mechanics, and rolling stock maintenance crew.
• Oversee all daily maintenance activities and ensure work is completed safely, efficiently, and in alignment with site priorities.
• Manage department safety by coaching, mentoring, and holding employees accountable for safe work practices, compliance requirements, and Intrepid safety policies.
• Ensure weekly maintenance plans are executed and coordinate with maintenance planning, scheduling, engineering, production, field, pond, and loadout teams to meet operational objectives.
• Implement, monitor, and improve preventative and predictive maintenance programs to support equipment reliability and continuous production operations.
• Schedule and prioritize repair, maintenance, and installation of machines, tools, mobile equipment, rolling stock, and plant equipment.
• Review work orders, job plans, maintenance requests, and equipment needs to determine priorities, resource requirements, and downtime planning.
• Manage department KPIs, performance metrics, budgets, labor utilization, material usage, and maintenance costs.
• Assist management with preparation, tracking, and execution of expense and capital budgets.
• Plan, develop, and implement improved maintenance methods, procedures, and processes to reduce downtime, minimize operating costs, and improve use of labor and materials.
• Ensure maintenance employees have proper tools, parts, materials, training, and support needed to complete assigned work safely and effectively.
• Partner with supervisors and department leaders to promote cross-department communication, cooperation, and operational reliability.
• Provide guidance on troubleshooting, repair strategy, equipment reliability, and long-term maintenance planning.
• Oversee hiring, onboarding, training, performance management, recognition, discipline, scheduling, and development of maintenance employees.
• Maintain department procedures and processes and ensure compliance with safety, environmental, regulatory, and company requirements.
• Communicate department goals, business updates, job expectations, performance matters, and operational priorities to employees and management.
• Complete required reports, investigations, documentation, and maintenance updates in accordance with company guidelines.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

• Associate degree required and/or equivalent combination of education and on-the-job experience.
• Minimum of 10 years of experience in an industrial maintenance environment.
• Experience leading maintenance teams, mechanics, or mobile equipment/rolling stock maintenance activities.
• Valid Driver's License.
• Strong safety awareness and ability to model safe work practices for others.
• Excellent organizational, verbal, and written communication skills.
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced industrial environment.
• Ability to lift heavy objects up to 50 lbs. or more as required.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

• 5 years of supervisory or leadership experience.
• OSHA 10HR training.
• MSHA surface training.
• Crane and rigging certification.
• OSHA forklift certification.
• Proficient in stick and MIG welding.
• Experience with mobile equipment, heavy equipment, rolling stock, hydraulics, 12/24 volt electrical systems, and general automotive systems.
• Experience with maintenance planning, budgeting, scheduling, and reliability improvement programs.

• Proficient in standard calculations such as proportions, percentages, area, circumference, volume, and algebra.
• Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and ability to troubleshoot complex maintenance issues.
• Excellent organizational, verbal, and written communication skills.
• Knowledge of maintenance planning, work order systems, preventative maintenance, predictive maintenance, and equipment reliability practices.
• Knowledge of rigging, overhead cranes, mobile cranes, forklifts, mobile equipment, and rolling stock maintenance.
• Understanding of centrifugal pumps, conveyor belts, screening machines, roll crushers, cage mills, fans, rotary dryers, valves, bearings, seals, packing, hydraulic systems, and related plant equipment.
• Ability to read and understand technical manuals, blueprints, mechanical drawings, schematics, and diagrams.
• General computer skills, including Microsoft Office and maintenance-related systems used for documentation, planning, and reporting.
• Ability to communicate job hazards, maintenance priorities, irregularities, and continuing needs to maintenance employees and operations leaders.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT

Work is performed both indoors and outdoors in a non-temperature-controlled industrial environment and may include adverse weather conditions, loud sounds, distracting noise levels, confined spaces, high places, uneven surfaces, and exposure to mobile and stationary equipment. • A 40-hour-a-week work schedule will be required. Schedule changes may be required based on business needs.
